2015年の国連サミットで採択された、持続可能な開発目標・SDGs(Sustainable Development Goals)。

Toyo University works on research to design a brighter future for the global society through the creation of new values. With the aim of distributing the research results more widely to society, we renewed our website to introduce our research and industry-government-academia collaboration activities. (https://www.toyo.ac.jp/dp/research/2021/). Also, we added an interview page with researchers (https://www.toyo.ac.jp/research/interview/) to convey the appeal of their research in more detail, and introduce innovative results and the latest research in a wide range of fields, including natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted at the United Nations Summit 2015: This international initiative consists of 17 goals and 169 targets to achieve a sustainable, better society by 2030, and advocating the principle of “leaving no one behind.” Interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation efforts are indispensable for solving the global issues described in the SDGs. Toyo University, as a "hub of knowledge" with 13 Faculties and 15 Graduate Schools in a wide range of academic fields, aims to make a significant contribution to the future of the world by actively working on the SDGs in both education and research aspects.

We promote research that can contribute to solving global issues to achieve the SDGs through the Toyo University Top Priority Research Program, a research grant program that is open to all students of Toyo University. Topics include the "Enhancement of human security through improvement of living environment in developing countries," "High-performance and Sustainable Manufacturing by utilizing biomimetics," and "A study to implement advanced science on extremophiles in society to achieve the SDGs."

Also, we offer education connected to the SDGs so that each of our students can see the issues raised in the SDGs as their own problems and actually address issues familiar to them. In AY 2020, we supported our students' activities to solve the issues described in the SDGs, such as holding Workshops for Toyo University Students to Learn about the SDGs.

Topics for the Workshop for Toyo University Students to Learn about the SDGs:

  • Introductory Workshop for Toyo University Students to Learn about the SDGs Lecturer and facilitator: Ms. Akiko Yagi, Development Education Association and Resource Center (DEAR)
    Assistant: Ms. Asumi Kimura
  • Let’s think about the SDGs as our own: Considering the links with the world through familiar things.” Lecturer: Ms. Yukiko Iwaoka, and Ms. Eno Nakamura, Development Education Association and Resource Center (DEAR)
  • Introduction to SDGs from the perspective of environmental issues Lecturer: Ms. Tomoko Hoshino, Japan Civil Society Network on SDGs
  • World gender issues we need to know now and our rights: Do you know about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)?” Lecturer: Ms. Chisato Shiba, Japanese Organization for International Cooperation in Family Planning, JOICFP
  • SDGs Goal 1: What is Poverty? Experiences of raising children and maintaining a career in Japan, and supporting children in Myanmar Lecturer: Ms. Ayako Kono, Representative of NGO SOSIA

Other than the workshops, we promote "going paperless" on campus. In 2013, we launched TOYO Web Style, Japan’s first web-based system that distributes information on entrance examinations and conducts application and admission procedures. This eliminated about 500,000 copies of the university guide and 140,000 application forms published every year. If we lined up the booklets (of the guide and application forms) which have been reduced up to 2020, the total length would be about 1,500 kilometers, which is equivalent to the distance of the main island of Japan. We have made advanced efforts in a variety of areas, including "going paperless," which is directly related to environmental and resource issues. For example, the Media Center at the Akabanedai Campus has expanded electronic books to replace bookshelves and collections of books with a concept of a "paperless library."

The special website (https://www.toyo.ac.jp/sdgs/) launched in 2020 introduces and distributes information on our research and educational activities for each of the 17 SDGs.
