About Toyo University The 98th Hakone Ekiden

SONO-ICHIBYO-O-KEZURIDASE ーEvery Second Counts!

In the 2020 Hakone Ekiden, the TETSUKON runners worked in unison and showed a gusty performance with a 2nd place finish in the first half and a 3rd place finish overall.
With the slogan the runners came up with, “Proving TETSUKON’s steel,” in their hearts, this year Toyo are aiming for overall victory.
TETSUKON *: Toyo University's school color. A rich purplish navy-blue.

The athletes went to the summer training camp with a sense of urgency. Our weakness revealed at this season’s Kanto Intercollege Championships showed us that we get carried away by our 3rd place comeback-finish at the 2021 Hakone Ekiden. Also, the performances of our alumni participating in the Tokyo Olympics this summer gave great encouragement to the runners. As a result, a strong determination has arisen within the team, and, with the pride of Toyo University, the runners have pledged a comeback in this ekiden season.
At the Izumo Ekiden, we finished third with a determined performance despite missing some of our strongest runners. With this momentum from the Izumo Ekiden, we went into the All-Japan University Men’s Ekiden with our young side aiming for a top-three finish. However, we did not deliver, and we missed out on the seeded positions for the first time in 14 years. We were looking to run a perfect ekiden, but we lacked the power to recover lost ground. The whole team is aware of the severity of this result. Time is limited, but we will work on our shortcomings and aim to make a recovery by next Hakone Ekiden. There are restrictions on spectating at the roadside, at relay stations, and at the start and finish lines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. With few opportunities for students and alumni to get together recently, we want to show our presence of Toyo University at the Hakone Ekiden and show everyone a performance worthy of the start to 2022. We ask for your continued support.
