Four Faculties and Five Departments Established in 2017 Reach Their Year of Completion and Produce their First Graduates

The Department of International Culture and Communication Studies, Faculty of Letters; Department of Global Innovation Studies, Department of Regional Development Studies, Faculty of Global and Regional Studies; the Department of International Tourism Management, Faculty of International Tourism Management; the Department of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design established in 2017, reached their year of completion in March 2021 and produced their first 838 graduates. Amid a difficult job hunting situation with some industries refraining from hiring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the four Faculties and five Departments leveraged their teaching and qualities to achieve high employment rates. At Toyo University, we will continue to incrementally implement various programs for students to consider their careers from long-term perspectives immediately after admission, along with providing curricular and extracurricular career support programs.

Professor Hironori Tanigama of the Faculty of Law receives the 46th Transportation Book Award

"Walking Edo Travelers: Looking at Oise-Mairi from the Perspective of Sports History” (Koyo Shobo), written by professor Hironori Tanigama of the Department of Law, Faculty of Law, won the 46th Transportation Book Award in the third history category. The Transportation Book Award is an award project that the Transportation Cooperation Foundation (Koutsu Kyouryoku Kai) has implemented since 1975. The objective is to disseminate information regarding transportation and enrich the education of people employed in the transportation industry by awarding and widely promoting exceptional books on transportation.
The award ceremony was held on April 5, 2021, at the Toyo University Hakusan Campus. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held individually for each award winner. A certificate was presented to Professor Tanigama by Fumio Ueno, Chairman and President of the Transportation Cooperation Foundation. The book unravels the journey of "Oise-Mairi," loved by the common people of Edo, from the perspective of sports history. It introduces the fascinating world surrounding the Japanese people and walking, which historical research has so far not shed light on. Professor Tanigama spoke of his pleasure in receiving the award, noting, "I am delighted that the research I have been working on since I joined Toyo University has been recognized in such a way. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Koyo Shobo for allowing me to publish this book and to Toyo University for supporting my daily research activities."

The 2nd Toyo University Model United Nations was Held Online Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

The 2nd Toyo University Model United Nations (TOYO.MUN Virtual Conference 2.0) was held online on March 27th and 28th, 2021. The Toyo University Model United Nations was launched last year mainly by students of the Department of Global Innovation Studies, Faculty of Global and Regional Studies under the concept of "opportunities to bring together students with various cultural backgrounds."The second Toyo University Model United Nations was attended by 88 participants from 19 educational institutions across 12 countries. Discussions were held in English about in-depth topics related to SDGs under the theme “Cultivating Global Youth Leaders through introducing Model United Nations.”
The participants were split into the three committees SOCHUM, WHO, and UNESCO. During the preparation period, participants researched and formulated policies about the theme and their assigned nations. At the meeting, participants held discussions and negotiations centered on the policies of the assigned countries to contribute to the solution of issues for the international society while considering their nation's national interests.
The Model UN was a valuable opportunity for international exchange activities with participants stating that “we were able to hold high-level discussions,” and “we were able to listen to the opinions of participants from all over the world. I want to continue to take part.”

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Top Global University Project” Toyo University Once Again Received an “A” in the Second Interim Evaluation

Toyo University was selected in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Top Global University Project (Type B: Global Traction Type)” in 2014. Under the project “TOYO GLOBAL DIAMONDS: Becoming an Asian hub university for global leaders,” we are promoting internationalization by striving to be a university that drives the globalization of Japanese society.
A second Interim evaluation of the initiatives was held in AY2020. Toyo University was awarded an A in the five-tier overall ranking (S/A/B/C/D) for the second year running. Namely, Toyo University was evaluated for its AY 2017 establishment of the three faculties and five departments that are driving force for internationalization (Department of Global Innovation Studies, Department of Regional Development Studies, Faculty of Global and Regional Studies; Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design; Faculty of International Tourism Management; Department of International Culture and Communication Studies, Faculty of Letters). Toyo University was also evaluated for its global human resource education and improved foreign language proficiency due to introducing the Toyo Global Leader Program for all undergraduate students and functioning as a hub for the UMAP International Secretariat. Furthermore, the operating company Toyo University Global Service Co., Ltd. (TUGS), which is 100% funded by Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution, was evaluated as a unique initiative that is not being undertaken by other universities.
The project support period is a maximum of ten years from 2014. As future issues, we will improve university-wide promotion and bottom-up of global human resource development, including reducing the disparity in implementation levels across campuses and departments.

Selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Plan to Utilize Digital Approaches to Enhance University and Technical College Education”

On March 11, 2021, Toyo University’s “Design student-centered education to ensure the growth of each and every student: A compass for Learning Journeys for 30,000 students" was chosen for "Designing student-centered education (Initiative 1)" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's “Plan for the Advanced Education at Universities and Colleges of Technology Using Digital Technology” This Toyo University initiative is based on “Integrate educational information data from admission to graduation and optimize the use of AI analysis results,” which is one of the five frameworks of the “Toyo University Basic Plan for Promoting Digital Transformation in Education” formulated in January 2021.
“Plan for the Advanced Education at Universities and Colleges of Technology Using Digital Technology” designed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology supports the required infrastructure costs to proactively incorporate digital technology at universities, junior colleges, and technical colleges by promoting initiatives that will serve as leading models. The objective is to implement educational approaches for higher education in the post-corona and disseminate the outcomes of these approaches.
All the initiatives chosen this year are not limited to the introduction of equipment and technology. They have been evaluated for being ambitious initiatives that will lead to the enhancement of education across the university as a whole, along with having shown specific measures for their continued implementation even after the subsidy period ends. They were also rated for having a high possibility of being disseminated to other universities. Also, the project committee expects participants to see this as a chance to reform the existing educational environment, implement plans, and communicate the outcomes to society widely. From now on, Toyo University will adequately utilize digital approaches and aim to bring about education that takes students’ perspectives into account.

1: The optimal use of analysis results of AI and data integration of consistent education information from admission to graduation
2: Enhancement and diversification of on-campus and off-campus learning styles
3: Global expansion (including domestic regions) of recurrent education aimed at the realization of the spirit that Toyo University was founded on
4: Creation of a systematic FD/SD program centered on student growth, and the streamlining of on-campus work
5: Creation of a promotion system by the Center for the Promotion of Digital Approaches and an evaluation system that incorporates external human resources

 

Toyo University concludes a “Partnership Agreement for the Creation of Local Industries” with Kinokawa City and Wakan Corporation in Wakayama Prefecture

On March 9, 2021, Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution concluded a “Partnership Agreement for the Creation of Local Industries” in cooperation with Kinokawa City, Japan’s leading fruit-producing region, and Wakan Corporation in Wakayama City, both in Wakayama Prefecture. The agreement aims to create regional industries through the development of products for heatstroke countermeasures.
The Research Center for Biomedical Engineering is pursuing research regarding the effective use of the components contained in the peel of citrus fruits. The director of the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering, Professor Kazunori Kato of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, has shown that taking auraptene included in the skin of hassaku oranges and summer oranges may be effective in combating heatstroke.
By promoting the joint development of products for heatstroke countermeasures with Wakan Corporation and building a foundation for a wide range of cooperative relationships with Kinokawa City, Toyo University expects to contribute to the formation and development of a prosperous and vibrant local community, to advance education and research, and for these to lead to the development of human resources.

“RIBBON” Emergency Support Scholarship for Students whose Household Earner has Lost their Job

We are conducting emergency support with the grant-type scholarship “RIBBON,” which aims to support the continued study of students who are in financial difficulty due to their household earner (father/mother) losing their job with the impact of COVID-19.
*”RIBBON” is funded by donations from the Alumni Association (Alumni), Hosuikai (parents and guarantors), officers, and faculty members.

Applicable students
Undergraduate students who are enrolled in Toyo University and are in financial difficulties due to their household earner (father/mother) having lost their job with the impact of COVID-19. However, the below students are not applicable.

Students who are currently on a leave of absence Graduate students, correspondence course students, exchange students, non-matriculated students, special non-matriculated students, sponsored students, international trainees, research students, special students If students’ household earner (father/mother) is working overseas and cannot submit application documents issued in Japan Student’s household earner has already found new employment and cannot submit an “Employment Insurance Qualified Recipient’s Identification Card”
