Swimming Club
Hidekzau Takehara and Four Toyo Alumni will Represent Japan at the World Aquatics Championships
Hidekazu Takehara, current Toyo student (Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences, 1st year student), swam a personal best to win the Men’s 200m Backstroke at the Japan Swimming Championships held in April. As a result, he was chosen to represent Japan at the World Aquatics Championships - Fukuoka 2023, due to be held from July 14 onward. Toyo Alumni Reona Aoki, Runa Imai, Yui Ohashi, and Rio Shirai were also selected and expected to perform strongly.

Kyo Hirata Wins at the East Asian Karate Federation Championship
& Toyo Wins the East Japan University Karatedo Championship (Men’s Group Kumite)
Kyo Hirata (Faculty of Law, 4th year student) participated in two events (Men’s Kumite 84kg, Male Team Kumite) at the 10th East Asian Karate Federation Championship in Taizhou, China, held from April 28 onward. In the individual final, Hirata stormed to victory, dominating his Taiwanese opponent 9–0. Hirata was victorious in events, with Japan putting down China 4–1 in the final of the team event. Also, at the 59th East Japan University Karatedo Championship held at the Nippon Budokan on May 5, the Toyo Karate Club came out on top of the 49 participating schools to win the Male Team Kumite for the first time in 36 years.

Toyo Puts in Stellar Performances at the Kanto Intercollege Championships and JAAF Athletics Championships
At the 102nd Kanto Inter University Track & Field Championships (Kanto Intercollege) held from May 1, Hiroki Yanagida (Faculty of Letters, 2nd year student) won the Men’s 100m for the second consecutive year. Daiki Ogawa, (Faculty of Human Life Design, 2nd year student) in the Men’s 400m Hurdles, and Manato Miyao, (Faculty of Law, 1st year student) in the Triple Jump, also brought home victories. Also, in the final of the Men’s 4x100m Relay, Haruki Narushima (Faculty of Human Life Design, 2nd year student), Riku Ooishi (Faculty of Health Sports and Sciences, 1st Year Student), Shota Nakamura (Faculty of Law, 4th year student), and Hiroki Yanigada clinched victory and put Toyo on the top of the podium after a five-year absence. In the 107th JAAF Athletics Championships and 39th Japanese U20 Championships held from June 1, Yuki Joseph Nakajima (Faculty of Information Sciences and Arts, 4th year student) set a Toyo record, winning the Men’s 400m. Daiki Ogawa also set a Toyo record and won the Men’s 400m Hurdles. Sora Nakamura (Faculty of Law, 1st year student), despite being a 1st year student, put in an outstanding performance to win the Men’s Long Jump.
Boxing Club
Shogo Tanaka Features in the World Boxing Championships
Shogo Tanaka (Faculty of Business Administration, 4th year student) featured in the Bantamweight competition at the 2023 AIBA Men’s Boxing World Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from May 1 to 14. After a solid performance to defeat his Afghan opponent 5–0 in the Round of 32, Tanaka was beaten by a strong Russian opponent in the Round of 16.
Baseball Club
Toyo Achieve a Long-Awaited Promotion to Division 1 After Consecutive Victories in the Tohto University Baseball Spring League Promotion-Relegation Playoff
The Toyo University Baseball Club, after winning Division 2 of the AY2023 Tohto University Baseball Spring League in May, faced Komazawa University in the Promotion-Relegation Playoff held on June 23 and 24 at the Meiji Jingu Stadium. Toyo achieved their long-awaited return to Division 1 after winning the first game 6–1 and the second 3–0, meaning that Toyo will compete in Division 1 in the Fall League.
Ice Skating Club (Hockey Division)
Toyo Wins the Kanto Collegiate Ice Hockey Championships for the 8th Time
Toyo won the Chichibunomiya Cup 70th Kanto Collegiate Ice Hockey Championships held on June 4 by overcoming Meiji University 3–1 in the Group A League Final. In addition, Teruto Nakajima (Faculty of Sociology, 4th year student) was chosen as MVP, Rin Takada (Faculty of Health Sports and Sciences, 1st year student) was selected as Most Valuable Rookie, and five other Toyo players made the Best Six. Toyo players put in spectacular performances in the Championships.
Wresting Club
Yuka Kagami Wins and Toki Ogawa Takes Third at the All-Japan Championships
Yuka Kagami (Faculty of Sociology, 4th year student) and Toki Ogawa (Faculty of Sociology, 3rd year student) took part in the 2023 Meiji Cup All-Japan Championships that started on June 15. Following her victory last year, Kagami won the 76kg Women’s Freestyle for the second year running. Also, Ogawa put in an impressive performance in the 70kg Men’s Freestyle to finish third.
