Looking back on the last four years at Toyo University
AY 2019
4.2019 – 3.2020
The year marked the beginning of the “Reiwa” era. Consumption tax was raised to 10%, and Japan’s best eight finish at the Rugby World Cup held in Japan for the first time had the nation enthralled daily. From early February of the following year, COVID-19 run rampant worldwide and drastically changed our daily lives.

- Course of Business Administration and Marketing, Graduate School of Business Administration and Course of International Culture and Communication Studies, Graduate School of Letters established
- Rio Shirai of the Swimming Club wins two events at the Japan National Championships and is chosen to represent Japan at the international level

- “Enryo Day” held as an event to commemorate 100 years since the passing of Enryo Inoue C
- Kawano Masatora of the Track and Field Club sets a new Japanese record for the 50 kilometers race walk and is chosen to represent Japan at the Tokyo Olympic Games

AY 2020
4.2020 – 3.2021
With the impact of the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Japan declared the first state of emergency in April. The entertainment industry was hit hard by the cancellation of various events in all industries. However, the anime film “Demon Slayer,” released in October, was a massive hit and was the first film in Japan to break through ¥40 billion at the box office.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the start date for classes was postponed from April 6 to April 27 (classes mostly held online)All enrolled students given ¥50,000 as special learning grant

- The four faculties and five departments of the Department of International Culture and Communication Studies, Faculty of Letters; Department of Global Innovation Studies, Department of Regional Development Studies, Faculty of Global and Regional Studies; the Department of International Tourism Management, Faculty of International Tourism Management; the Department of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design established in 2017, reached their year of completion and produced their first graduates

AY 2021
4.2021 – 3.2022
With no improvement to the situation regarding COVID-19, the Government of Japan declared a state of emergency two more times, in April and July. The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were held one year later, from July to August, and the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in February 2022. Japan achieved a record medal haul in both the Winter and Summer Games. The efforts of the athletes gave courage and inspiration to many people.

AY 2022
4.2022 – 3.2023
The yen continues to lose value due to increases in the difference in interest rates between Japan and the US, and in October temporarily hit the 150 yen per dollar rate for the first time since the bubble period. Japan beat football giants Germany and Spain to go through the group stage and reach the knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar in November. The whole nation was filled with joy.
