AY 2019

4.2019 – 3.2020

The year marked the beginning of the “Reiwa” era. Consumption tax was raised to 10%, and Japan’s best eight finish at the Rugby World Cup held in Japan for the first time had the nation enthralled daily. From early February of the following year, COVID-19 run rampant worldwide and drastically changed our daily lives.

April 2019	Course of Business Administration and Marketing, Graduate School of Business Administration and Course of International Culture and Communication Studies, Graduate School of Letters established Rio Shirai of the Swimming Club wins two events at the Japan National Championships and is chosen to represent Japan at the international level
July	Medals won by students at 30th World University Games, Swimming Club: Runa Imai (silver and bronze); Track and Field Club: Koki Ikeda (2 golds), Masatora Kawano (gold and silver), Akira Aizawa (gold), Daisuke Miyamoto(gold); Women’s Football Club: Mariko Kubo, Nana Tsuneda, Rio Ouchi (silver)
October	Special lecture by President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev held, and honorary doctoral degree awarded A Toshiya Sato of the Baseball Club is chosen as a second-round pick by the Chiba Lotte Marines in the Nippon Professional Baseball Draft B “Enryo Day” held as an event to commemorate 100 years since the passing of Enryo Inoue C Kawano Masatora of the Track and Field Club sets a new Japanese record for the 50 kilometers race walk and is chosen to represent Japan at the Tokyo Olympic Games
November	Awarded ISAS 2.0 Learning Badge by the International Association of Universities Commemorative event held to celebrate ten years since the opening of the Faculty of Information Sciences and Arts
December	Light-up ceremony held for the Winter Illuminations at the Hakusan Campus’ Hosui no Mori
March 2020	University Diploma Presentation and Graduation Ceremony canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19

AY 2020

4.2020 – 3.2021

With the impact of the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Japan declared the first state of emergency in April. The entertainment industry was hit hard by the cancellation of various events in all industries. However, the anime film “Demon Slayer,” released in October, was a massive hit and was the first film in Japan to break through ¥40 billion at the box office.

April 2020	Professor Etsuko Yaguchi becomes the 44th president of Toyo University Entrance ceremony canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19 Due to the impact of COVID-19, the start date for classes was postponed from April 6 to April 27 (classes mostly held online)All enrolled students given ¥50,000 as special learning grant

January 2021	WELLB HUB-2 completed at the Akabanedai Campus C
February	Ten Years after the Great East Japan Earthquake Symposium is held titled “Great East Japan Earthquake, Reconstruction Efforts 10 Years on”
March	The four faculties and five departments of the Department of International Culture and Communication Studies, Faculty of Letters; Department of Global Innovation Studies, Department of Regional Development Studies, Faculty of Global and Regional Studies; the Department of International Tourism Management, Faculty of International Tourism Management; the Department of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design established in 2017, reached their year of completion and produced their first graduates

AY 2021

4.2021 – 3.2022

With no improvement to the situation regarding COVID-19, the Government of Japan declared a state of emergency two more times, in April and July. The Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games were held one year later, from July to August, and the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games were held in February 2022. Japan achieved a record medal haul in both the Winter and Summer Games. The efforts of the athletes gave courage and inspiration to many people.

June	Symposium held to commemorate the enactment of the Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution SDGs Action Charter
July	Alumni Yui Ohashi wins two gold medals in both the Women’s 200m and 400m Individual Medley at the Tokyo Games, becoming the first Japanese female swimmer to do so A
August	Alumni Koki Ikeda wins a silver medal at the 20km Race Walk at the Tokyo Games
September	COVID-19 Vaccinations Implemented at Toyo University B
October	SDGs weeks held
January 2022	International residence AI-House Hub-4 completed C Alumni Mitakeumi wins the top-division (makunouchi) championship and becomes the first alumni to reach the rank of ōzeki.
March	The Toyo University official app is released

4.2022 – 3.2023

The yen continues to lose value due to increases in the difference in interest rates between Japan and the US, and in October temporarily hit the 150 yen per dollar rate for the first time since the bubble period. Japan beat football giants Germany and Spain to go through the group stage and reach the knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar in November. The whole nation was filled with joy.

August	Hiroki Yanagita, Shunki Tateno, and Daiki Ogawa complete at the 19th World Athletics U20 Championships
September	Chosen for the Inter-University Exchange Project (Re-Inventing Japan Project) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Official academic exchange agreement concluded with Uzbekistan’s Silk Road International University of Tourism
October	First in-person University Festival held for the first time in three years
December	Toyo competes at the All-Japan University Rugby Championship for the first time B
January 2023	The Women’s Football Club has their first championship success at the 31st All Japan University Women’s Football Championship C HELSPO HUB-3 completed at the Akabanedai Campus
