The 36th annual Toyo University
“Gendai Gakusei Hyakunin Isshu” Contest
The "Gendai Gakusei Hyakunin Isshu" is a student tanka contest that began in 1987 as a commemorative ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Toyo University's founding.
Every year, on the topic of “present-day students’ perspectives and lifestyle,” students from Japan and overseas submit many tankas overflowing with students’ youthful expressions that depict their daily lives and social conditions. The tankas offer a glimpse into the student’s current situation. The contest has received 1,717,490 entries to date, and for this year’s 36th contest, we received 65,966 entries from 675 schools. After a rigorous review conducted in January 2023, we published 100 selected tankas and 10 tankas from the elementary student category. Here we will introduce 15 tankas that were particularly outstanding.
