Many Sports Clubs are Making Great Strides
1 Boxing Club
Toyo Wins the University Title Becoming the Top University in Japan for the Second Time.
On July 16, 2022, the Kanto University Boxing League was held at Korakuen Hall (Tokyo), where Toyo University won the Men’s Division 1 for the second time since 2019. In the Women’s Kanto University Boxing Tournament held on the following day, both Hikaru Kato (2nd year student in the Faculty of Business Administration) in the minimumweight division and Arisa Kishimoto (2nd year student in the Faculty of Business Administration) in the flyweight division came out on top. The 76th University Championship Match to decide the best university in Japan was held at the Adastria Mito Arena (Ibaraki Prefecture) on August 27. Toyo went up against Osaka University of Commerce, winners of the Kansai Student League Division 1. Toyo won nine fights to Osaka University of Commerce’s two and became the top university in Japan for the second time since 2019. Reito Tsutsumi (2nd year student in the Faculty of Business Administration) won the MVP Award, and Shunpei Kinjo (4th year student, Faculty of Business Administration) won the Technique Award.
The successes of the Boxing Club continued at the ASBC Asian Elite Championships held in Amman, Jordan, in November. Competing in the minimumweight division, Kato battled her way to the semi-finals, dispatched her Korean opponent, and proceeded to the final on a 3-2 decision. In the final, Kato was forced to retire due to injury, but thanks to her stellar performance, she brought home a silver medal. At the All Japan Championships also held in November at the Sumida City Gymnasium (Tokyo) Shodai Koto (1st year student in the Faculty of Business Administration) won the men's minimumweight division class, and Arisa Kishimoto won the women's flyweight division.
2 Rugby Club
Toyo Wins the Right to Participate in the Japan Collegiate Rugby Championship for the First Time.
Toyo’s Rugby Club continues to make great strides after returning to the Kanto University League 1st Division for the first time in 29 years thanks to winning the Promotion-Relegation Playoff in December 2021 .
The 11th Kanto University Spring Conference was held from April to June 2022, where Toyo created significant momentum by winning all five of their games. In the first game of the Kanto University League 1st Division held on September 11, Toyo won 27-24 against Tokai University, a squad that has won the league the last four years and finished in the top four of the All-Japan University Rugby Championship. In the second game, Toyo beat Kanto Gakuin University 38-31, but in the third game, they lost to Daito Bunka University by one point. In the fourth game, Toyo returned to its winning ways by defeating Nihon University 33-32. In the following fifth game, Toyo suffered a two-point defeat at the hands of Ryutsu Keizai University. However, Toyo bounced back in the sixth and seventh games, with back-to-back victories against Hosei University and Rissho University, respectively. These results led Toyo to finish third with five wins, two losses and 22 points, and earn the right to participate in the Japan Collegiate Rugby Championship, which is awarded to the top three universities in the Kanto League 1.
3 Wresting Club
Yuka Kagami Wins Bronze at the World Championships.
At the Meiji Cup All-Japan Wrestling Championship held at the Komazawa Olympic Park Gymnasium (Tokyo) on June 16, 2022, Yuka Kagami (3rd year student in the Faculty of Sociology) won the women’s 76kg freestyle division for the first time. Kagami showed her strength with a powerful 4-0 victory in the final, not giving a single point to her opponent. With this, Kagami earned the right to represent Japan at the World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, which was held in September. At the World Championships on September 14 (early morning on the 15th Japan time), despite a narrow defeat in the women's freestyle 76 kg quarterfinals, Kagami won a bronze medal after defeating her Ecuadorian opponent 4-0 in the third-place match. With these performances, Kagami showed her strong desire to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
4 Football Club
The Women’s Team Won the Kanto University Women’s Football League for the First Time.
The women’s team of the Football Club beat Waseda University 1-0 in the final match of the 36th Kanto University Women's Football League Division 1 held on November 10, 2022. The women’s team achieved their long-sought dream of winning the Kanto University Women's Football League for the first time on the milestone of ten years since its founding. The women’s team will participate as the number one team in Kanto at the 31st All Japan University Women’s Soccer Championship which starts on December 24.
5 Ice Skating Club (Hockey Division)
Toyo Crowned Champions of the AY2022 Kanto University League with Victory in the Final Game.
Forward Teruto Nakajima (3rd year student in the Faculty of Sociology) and goalkeeper Eiki Sato (3rd year student in the Faculty of Sociology) were selected for the Japan team to compete at the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge, held in Budapest, Hungary, from November 10 to 13, 2022. Also, on the final day of the 2022 Kanto University League Division 1 Group A Final League, Toyo defeated Meiji University—who, going into the game, had the same amount of points as Toyo and was competing for the championship—in a head-to-head match and won the league for the second consecutive year, Toyo’s 10th championship success to date.
6 Alumni
Alumni Who Won Medals at the World Championships Are Presented with the Chairman’s Awards.
Yu Hanaguruma (graduated March 2022), Koki Ikeda (graduated March 2021), Masatora Kawano (graduated March 2021) won medals at World Championships held this year. In recognition of their achievements, the alumni were presented with the Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution Chairman’s Award on September 1, 2022. Hanaguruma won silver in the men’s 200m breaststroke at the 19th FINA World Championships in June. Ikeda won a silver medal in the men's 20km race walk at the 18th World Athletics Championships held in July, and Kawano also took silver in the men's 35km race walk. We look forward to the continued success of our alumni competing on the world stage.
