The 35th annual Toyo University
“Gendai Gakusei Hyakunin Isshu” Contest
The "Gendai Gakusei Hyakunin Isshu" began in 1987 as a commemorative ceremony to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Toyo University's founding. Now in its 35th year, the contest has received 1,651,524 entries to date.
Every year many tankas overflowing with students’ youthful expressions on the topic of “Present-day students’ perspectives and lifestyle” are submitted from students within Japan and overseas. On the occasion of the 35th Gendai Gakusei Hyakunin Isshu, 78,444 tankas were submitted by students from 771 schools, the largest number of tankas ever submitted, almost 13,000 more than last year. After a rigorous review conducted in January 2022, we published 100 tankas that vividly depict students’ current situation and ten tankas from the elementary school student category. Here we will introduce 15 tankas that were particularly outstanding.
