Connecting the World and Japan:
The program that embodies Toyo University's traditions

Dr. Etsuko YaguchiPresident, Toyo University

After the COVID-19 pandemic caused restrictions on international exchange, we are excited that these restrictions are finally being lifted. As part of this new project, we welcome international students who are interested in building a career related to Japan in the future. In addition, our own students are participating in activities at our project partner institutions all over the world alongside local students studying Japanese. This provides our students with unique opportunities to not only understand the local culture but also reflect on their own cultural background.

At Toyo University, we have always valued the importance of learning from the world around us and providing opportunities for improving cross-cultural understanding and language learning. This tradition has been a fundamental part of our university since its founding. We believe that everyone who participates in this program will gain a fresh perspective on international exchange.

Before our university was selected for the “FY2022 Inter-University Exchange Project: Creation of Inter-University Exchanges in the Indo-Pacific Region” (from 2022 to 2026), we implemented the “International Student Employment Promotion Program” (from 2017 to 2021). This was an initiative for promoting the employment of international students at Japanese companies. From the experiences of this program, we realized the importance of providing international students with opportunities to increase their general Japanese language proficiency, especially, strengthen understanding of professional language for business, and learn about Japan’s corporate culture. When we held the “Business Japanese Tips Course” during the summer and winter vacation periods, more than 20,000 students from all over the world participated in each session. This showed the high demand for business Japanese, and we got an enthusiasticresponse to the teaching.

We were selected for the Inter-University Exchange Project launched in FY2022 as a result of these efforts, and we are currently promoting the reinforcement of business Japanese education through this program with the goal of cultivating business professionals with multicultural communication skills and global mindset that can play an active role in global society.

We offer a wide range of programs as part of this project, such as internship experiences, student-led seminars (PBL), entrepreneur courses, and the Toyo Model UN activity. By spreading information about the program content, we hope all students considering participation in international society as business professionals with high level of Japanese language proficiency will take part.

At Toyo University, our policy when receiving international students is “guaranteeing a path from the beginning to goal” and we provide a thorough Japanese education program to achieve this.
Alongside the Inter-University Exchange Project launched last year, we are launching a new program for robust support of the international student employment in Japan, the exit from studying at our university.

Through taking business Japanese classes, studying for the Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT), and involvement in corporate internship programs, international students from overseas who participate in this program will get real-world experience in preparation for using Japanese for work. In addition to this, participation in extracurricular activities and international exchange programs on campus will provide abundant interactions with Japanese students, enabling international students to improve their understanding of Japan and strive to become business professionals with high level of Japanese language proficiency. There are numerous students here at this university with an interest in international exchange, and our Japanese language instructors also have abundant experience in the classroom which they will use to provide their full support. If you have ever seriously considered working in Japan in the future or would like to put the Japanese you have studied up until now to use in your career moving forward, please take this opportunity to challenge your potential.

We look forward to your participation.
