 Educational goals

The department of Japanese literature and culture encourages students to approach the subjects of Japanese literature, language, and culture in a manner that is comprehensive and multifaceted. It aims to nurture outstanding talent that can succeed in the tradition and establish new Japanese literature and culture in a global age.

Overview of the Department

The department of Japanese literature and culture aims to provide students with abundant educational and research opportunities appropriate for the new age. Currently, the world now faces the challenge of establishing and passing each community’s unique cultural heritage on to the next generation. Adapting to its new concept of “Looking at Japan from the perspective of the world,” the department implements innovative education and research programs that enables students to explore the essence of Japan and acquire academic knowledge that can meet the needs of the increasingly globalized world.

The Character of the Department

The department consists of four specialized fields; Japanese linguistics, classical literature and culture, modern and contemporary literature and culture, and comparative literature and culture. Each field hosts specialized seminars that allow students explore each subject in depth while also acquiring comprehensive and multifaceted knowledge about Japan.

The Field of Japanese Linguistics

Along with knowledge of general linguistic theories and comparative studies, students acquire the appropriate skills to integrate diachronic and synchronic knowledge and conduct empirical studies from a diverse range of perspectives.

The Field of Classical Literature and Culture

By studying classical literature from the ancient to the early modern period, the students become able to acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of Japanese literature, culture, and thought, while also examining them from an empirical perspective.

The Field of Modern and Contemporary Literature and Culture

By employing a wide range of approaches, students analyze and discuss literary works from the Meiji period until the present day, and they unravel the significance of the historic context as well as the thinking behind modern and contemporary literary works.


The Field of Comparative Literature and Culture

By studying the concepts and principles of comparative literature and culture, students gain the ability to capture Japan from a comparative perspective and explore the significance and potential that Japanese literature and culture offers the international community.
















日本文学文化学科ではゼミナールを数多く開いています。1年生での初年次ゼミナール・実践基礎ゼミナールに始まり、2年生からは各専攻分野別のゼミナールに取り組むことで、着実に専門性を深めることができます。 また、専門科目を数多く用意し、必修科目を最小限に抑えることで、学習を進める上で必要な科目をオンデマンドで選択することができます。各専攻分野間の自由な横断が可能なことと合わせ、とてもフレキシブルな履修システムとなっています。
