新型コロナウイルス感染症がWHO（世界保健機関）によりパンデミック宣言されたのは2020年3月11日のことです。その後に予定されていた卒業式も入学式も中止となりました。いま世界中がこの新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大と対峙しており、この見えない敵への「恐怖と不安」と闘っています。この危機は、地震や台風などの災害とは違い、他所からは誰も助けに来てはくれません。一人ひとりの感染しない、感染させないという努力なくして、この「恐怖と不安」から逃れることはできないのです。

学生と教員の皆さんは、オンライン授業にもどかしさや不満を感じる場面もあることと思います。しかし、これは世界に共通した選択であり受容してほしいと思います。そうした中で本学は、特別就学支援金を支給することとしました。また、家計急変によって困窮している学生への特別奨学資金創設も決めました。これはひとえに先人たちが築いてくれた健全経営の賜物であり、苦難に直面した学生たちに学業を続けさせたいという教職員の強い心情が実現させたものです。

この闘いは、他者との接触削減の努力によって、日本における緊急事態宣言はようやく解除されましたが、終息宣言のためには有効なワクチン等の開発が待たれます。世界の英知が知見、治験を共有、協力することが緊要です。人類は地球という「ノアの方舟」に乗っています。全人類はこのパンデミックと闘う運命共同体なのです。沈没しかけている「タイタニック号」に乗っているかのような、脱出の先陣争いは許されません。

ぜひ、世界地図の中で考えることを勧めます。それは本学創立者である井上円了博士の志につながるものであると考えています。

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic over the infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus on March 11, 2020. Following this declaration, we cancelled our graduation and entrance ceremonies. The new disease is spreading across the world and we are fighting this invisible enemy in a state of fear and anxiety. Unlike disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, we cannot expect someone from another region to come and save us from this crisis. Nobody can escape from the fear and anxiety caused by the disease. It is up to individuals to take care to avoid infection and to avoid infecting others so as to put an end to the pandemic.

Our students and faculty members may feel frustrated and dissatisfied with online classes. However, this is a common option around the world, and I hope you will come to terms with it. In view of the circumstances, the university decided to provide a special learning grant. We also decided to create a special scholarship fund for students who are in need of financial support due to a sudden change in their family finances. We can do this thanks to the sound management structure that our predecessors have built up for the university and to the support provided by our faculty members, who very much want students facing such hardships caused by the virus to continue their studies.

As a result of the efforts made by people to reduce their contacts with others across Japan, the state of emergency declared in the country has finally been lifted. However, the pandemic will not end unless effective vaccines and other medicines are developed. It is essential that we gather wisdom and share knowledge as well as the results of clinical tests on a global scale to put an end to the crisis. All the people of Earth are on a Noah’s Ark and have a shared fate in fighting this pandemic. We are not on a sinking Titanic and cannot just save ourselves.

In the face of this crisis, I strongly advise you to think globally, which I believe has much to do with the aspirations of Dr. Enryo Inoue, the founder of this university.

2020年度は新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大により世界中の大学が、これまでにない困難を経験しています。日本有数の学生数を誇る総合大学へと発展した東洋大学も、この難局を乗り越えるために、学生、教職員、保護者、関係者が一丸となって努力を重ねています。

本学は、2019年度までに、グローバル化、キャリア教育、哲学教育を柱として急成長を遂げ、学生や留学生から「選ばれる大学」としての地位を確立し、今後は国際水準の研究の展開と教育における質保証への取り組みを重点的に強化しようとしています。さらに、SDGsに示されているような地球的課題解決に向けた実践的な貢献へと歩みを進めることを目指し、2021年度にはライフデザイン学部を赤羽台キャンパスに移転し、2023年度からは福祉社会デザイン学部^※と健康スポーツ科学部^※という二つの学部を開設する予定でおります。福祉系・健康系の学部ができることで、既設の情報連携学部とともに、日本そして世界が抱える課題に挑戦する拠点が誕生します。

さて、ポストコロナの世界ではグローバル化の姿も変容せざるを得ません。直接的な交流が制限される中、ICTを駆使した交流による相互理解から始まり、世界的な課題に挑戦する協働プロジェクトの一員として活躍することが国際化の実質となる兆しがあります。グローバル化の価値が人間を救済する方向で要請される時が来たといえましょう。そして、産業構造の変化が発生し、既存の枠組みを超えた柔軟なキャリア展望が求められますが、そこには、厳しさとともに新たな挑戦の可能性も開かれているのです。

本学の目指そうとしている方向は、こうした状況において一層その価値を増していると認識しております。「諸学の基礎は哲学にあり」という建学の理念を堅持し、現象の本質を見極め、他者のために自己を磨き奮闘する「東洋大学の心」を忘れずに、あらゆる智の結集と連携により、多様性を認め豊かに支え合う社会の創造に、東洋大学は貢献し続けます。

In AY2020, universities around the world are facing unprecedented difficulties due to the spread of a new coronavirus infection. At Toyo University, which has grown into a university with one of the largest student bodies in Japan, all stakeholders, including students, faculty members, and students’ parents and other supporters, are making a concerted effort to overcome the hardship.

By AY2019, the University had achieved rapid growth with a focus on globalization, career education, and philosophy education, and established itself as a “university of choice” for students and international students. We are now focusing on promoting world-class research activities and on strengthening the measures to ensure the quality of our education. Furthermore, with an eye to making practical contributions to the solution of global issues such as those described in the SDGs, we will relocate the Faculty of Human Life Design to the Akabanedai Campus in AY2021. We also plan to open two faculties: the Faculty of Design for Welfare Society* and the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences*. By adding these welfare and health-related faculties to the existing Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, we will establish a new base to meet the challenges faced by Japan and the world.

In the post-corona world, the form of globalization will inevitably change. Because in-person interactions are now restricted, exchanges based on the use of ICT will be promoted for mutual understanding, and working as a member of a project to meet a global challenge is becoming an essential form of internationalization. We are now required to foster globalization in a way that helps solve the issues faced by humanity. As the industrial structure changes, more flexible career development will be needed, which will be difficult but will also bring us opportunities to take on new challenges.

Under these circumstances, I believe Toyo University is heading in the right direction to increase its value to society. The university’s founder believed that “The Basis of All Learning Lies in Philosophy.” Keeping this in mind, as the “Heart of Toyo University,” we will seek to gain insight into the true nature of things and will stay true to the principle of “Improving oneself for the benefit of others.” Toyo University will continue to contribute to the creation of a society in which diversity is acknowledged and people support each other in a spiritually rich manner.
