Think about happiness

OHIRA Toshie, 61, self-employment
Translated by SATO Takumi

After 2:46 pm, March 11, 2011, many people must think of happiness through ordinary daily life. What happened to us at that time…

I had sprained my leg a few days before the quake. It was too hard for me to walk. Therefore I took some days off. I was doing nothing, watching TV. Suddenly, “Emergency Earthquake Warning” was broadcast. At the same time, I felt the strong shaking I have never felt before. I kept on holding a pillar to bear this shaking.

With a banging noise, all the household goods fell down. I didn’t know what was what. It was impossible for me to go the entrance and open the door. The shaking became more and more terrible. I would be crushed if I stayed inside. I crawled on my hands and knees. I managed to escape to the garden. Many neighbors were also outside and seemed to be anxious. My husband came back from office, and said to me. “Are you OK?”
