Introduction to Bio-nano Science Fusion

Toru MaekawaBio-nano fusion science is one of the most important subjects in the 21st Century. In this seminar, typical studies such as the creation of nanostructures and bio-nano robots and the designing and fabrication of nano/micro environmental and biomedical devices, which have been carried out at the Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre, are introduced in order to motivate the Master Course students to carry out advanced research by international standard.

Each student will eventually be able to read and understand scientific papers published in international journals of high impact factors. Each student will finally be able to write scientific articles of high standard in English.

Hisao MorimotoThe aim of this lecture is to introduce students to the mathematical methods and concepts which are useful in bio-nano science research. The lecture is designed even for students who are unfamiliar with the mathematical methods and therefore the lecture will be started by reviewing the fundamental concepts.

Takashi UchidaThe ultimate aim is to create advanced researchers who can understand the fundamental concepts constructing physical sciences. The lecture is designed even for students from non-physical background, focusing on the history, basic ideas and future of physical sciences.

Fundamental Biotechnology
(Lecture)
Toru MizukiBiotechnology is a field using cells or their materials to create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental, and other products to benefit society. This lecture focuses on the various applications of microbial-biotechnology. Knowledge in microbiology is growing exponentially through the determination of genomic sequences of hundreds of microorganisms and the invention of new technologies using microorganisms. Several examples of these applications are introduced for students to learn fundamental biotechnology. In this course, students should understand a genetic engineering, a biocatalysis, a production of proteins, biopolymers, amino acids, and antibiotics.
Microbiology

 Microorganisms are regarded as most valuable research tools for exploring basic life science. This lecture covers the principles of cell structures and functions, classification and diversity, biochemical characteristics, genetics, biotechnology and industrial application.
Extremophiles
(Lecture)
 There are variety of microcreatures, which can survive under extreme conditions such as high/low temperature, high pressure, high/low pH and high concentrations of salt. Some bacteria can live even in organic solvents. In this lecture, extremophiles are focused on and discuss the application of them to industries.
