"Food"is the most basic factor for living a healthy life.

Food is the also most intimately related to human growth, health maintenance and sustaining life. As we approach a period where there are fewer children and constantly increasing number of aged in Japan, research is being conducted to find a solution to this problem. The Faculty of Food and Nutritional Science of Toyo University takes a scientific approach to the relationship of food/nutrition for athletes, which is attracting more and more attention. Based on "life science" which seeks to determine the origin of life, students are provided with an integrated, scientific education of "food," including safety of and reassurance concerning food, food product development and nutrition.

The courses not only provide students with special knowledge and expertise, but provides an overall personal education in the manner that Toyo University is known for, including philosophy and ethics. The courses are designed to develop true food professionals capable of contributing to society.

The Faculty of Life Sciences was founded in 1997; it was originally called the "Department of Life Sciences."

Because of increasing interest in the field of biotechnology, the "Department of Applied Biosciences" and "Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences" were added in 2009, thus creating three departments. The "Department of Nutritional Sciences" was established in 2013, and the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences was separated from the Faculty of Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Food and Nutritional Science consisting of two departments was founded.

The "Food Science Course" and "Sports and Food Function Course" were also established with the Department of Food and Life Sciences. The Department of Nutritional and Health Sciences not only serves as the site of medicine, welfare and education focusing on training of nutritionists, but includes playing an active part in local communities and businesses. It is also not concerned with merely provided students with qualifications, but rather focuses on developing human resources who are equipped with management and communication skills for the new age.

The Faculty of Food and Nutritional Science requires that students train in accordance with the educational courses in keeping with the educational goals established for the two departments, and acquire the number of credits required for receiving a degree. From the standpoint of life sciences, the students must have a strong commitment to contributing to development of the global community in order for the people to lead active lifestyle through good health throughout their lives by getting a deep understanding of food, nutrition and health.
