Athletics

Sports are a traditional part of Toyo University activities. Based on the spirit of scholar athletes, teamwork and sportsmanship are cultivated through sporting events.

Our most popular sports teams include our long-distance track team that won the Hakone Ekiden, our hardball baseball club that won the national championship, our ice skating club hockey team that won the Kanto Universities Ice Hockey League, and our sumo club that produces many champions at student competitions. Our soccer club, rugby club, and swimming club also perform well at various competitions.

The Track Team

The Track Team leads the Japan University Ekiden, winning all "3 Major Student Ekidens" including the Izumo Ekiden, National University Ekiden, and Hakone Ekiden.

At the most traditional "Hakone Ekiden," our team has participated more than 60 times. At the 85th competition in 2009, the team won the overall championship by achieving a perfect winning record in both legs of the race, and in 2012, we became the 5th school to set a new record as a perfect champion by setting new records for each leg and for the entire race.

Olympic athletes from Toyo University have been emerged during various marathons and mid-long distance races.

Improvement in Physical Education and Extracurricular Sports Activities

General Sports Center

Toyo University has been working to organize facilities and improve sports activities. In April of 2011, the "125 Anniversary Toyo University General Sports Center" was completed at Shimizu-Cho, Itabashi-Ku. The facilities for student physical education and lectures, and which can be used by sports clubs have been improved. With the completion of the facility, we are planning to use this opportunity to enter a basic agreement for regional cooperation with Itabashi Ward and establish an education, research, culture, and regional development collaboration.
