東洋大学経済学部 学部長 小川 芳樹
Yoshiki Ogawa, Dean of the Toyo University Faculty of Economics

Toyo University was founded by Dr. Enryo Inoue in 1887 as part of the former Philosophy Academy (or Tetsugakukan). Even at that time, economics classes were already being taught at the Academy. Our faculty is the second oldest after the Toyo University Faculty of Letters. Our long history has always kept us at the forefront of the times and given us rich insights as we deeply explore the “economics of the day.”

Our goal is to keep challenging ourselves to inquire into the wide-ranging and cutting-edge issues in our current economy and society, as we work from the foundation and extensive tradition that our faculty has built. Starting in 2000, our faculty was reformed into its current four-department structure to more effectively respond to our increasingly diverse and complex society and economy. Addressing varied student needs, the Department of Economics thoroughly studies theoretical and empirical economics; the Department of International Economics emphasizes the explaining and understanding of issues related to global economics; the Department of Policy Studies comprehensively addresses the serious issues faced by Japan’s society and economy today; and the Department of Economics (Evening Course) offers courses for students who wish to study economics while making the most efficient use of their time.

Each department also puts considerable effort into small-group seminar classes that deliver an educational environment for fostering problem-discovery and problem-solution methods initiated by the students themselves. The seminar thesis and the graduation thesis requirement place particular emphasis on creating experiences and opportunities for students to craft their own original work and develop abilities related to persuasion. Additionally, we offer a robust selection of practical classes in economics, language classes in English and other languages, and advanced computer training so that students can develop real-world, applicable skills. Our faculty includes instructors with broad-based experience at the forefront of economics, which enables students to select a focused area of specialization that corresponds to their individual interests.

Entering the 21st century, we are facing unprecedented economic stagnation on a global scale, international environmental issues such as climate abnormalities, and a changing social structure due to rapid innovations in IT. This means that socioeconomic changes are occurring on a level we have never experienced before. I hope that students will leverage advantageous skills from having studied for four years in the Faculty of Economics and hone their individual talents to a new level so that they can embark on a voyage toward fulfilling their personal role and mission in the real world.

The Faculty of Economics warmly supports and monitors each and every student so that they can make this achievement their own.
