Department of Social Psychology

Educational Goals

The coming years will require us to accurately assess situations and proactively take actions. Of course, there is no immutable “norm” in our lives that is not influenced by history and culture. Therefore, once again, it is necessary to question the tangible and intangible rules that restrict us. Understanding the various related subjects based on sociology “through one’s own efforts” is emphasized as a means of learning that enables one to live in a flexible, active, and responsible manner. The department is attempting to train individuals who can think independently and express their opinions in their own words regardless of the lifestyles they choose.

Overview

The department provides an opportunity for students to experience research and scholarship in various subjects in fields that are based on sociology. Students have the opportunity to become very well acquainted with the history, structure, or issues surrounding concepts such as families, local regions, organizations, and the environment. The department also provides them the opportunity to thoroughly consider the problems in the relations between an individual and his or her society or environment from a global perspective.
Furthermore, seminars that provides students with an environment to actively learn while being directly exposed to the latest research results are offered from freshman year onwards. After they have broadened their perspectives based on the expansive scope of research subjects that are characteristic to sociology, students narrow down the subject of their research and focus on their graduation thesis. This is an ideal department for individuals who want to actively and independently improve themselves.

Characteristics

This department is different from the other departments in the Faculty of Sociology because one of its requirements is a graduation thesis (graduation research). In this thesis, students work out social realities by conducting studies and interpreting materials and literature based on their own interest in a particular problem; they are then required to summarize that social problem from their own unique perspective. The experience of the “pain of creating” such an original material is extremely important regardless of the type of career students choose to pursue after graduation. We firmly believe that students’ university lives are very significant if they can find originality in their own research activities and make the most of the guidance or advice of and discussions they have with the teaching staff or other individuals in their seminars.
