Educational Goals

Our graduates should have the flexibility to cope with changes in society by acquiring a refined scientific perspective with a focus on principles, fundamentals and essence, together with a well-defined viewpoint and solid thinking.

We educate engineers who are rich in creativity and are not afraid to challenge the unknown.

Mechanical engineering includes a wide range of technical fields, has a wide societal impact, and is essential for economic development. Mechanical engineering is expected to play a major role in scientific and technological development in the twenty-first century in areas such as human and robot coexistence, environmental and energy problems, and nano- and micro-technology.

In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, students can develop an “engineering sense” that emphasizes cost, efficiency, optimization, etc. Furthermore, students can polish their scientific sense focusing on the essentials by considering various subjects while asking "what is the principle", "why is it so" and so on.

For the future of Japan, we cultivate practical engineers for the twenty-first century from both soft and hard perspectives.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is accredited by the Japanese Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE), a third-party evaluation organization that audits and certifies engineering education programs in higher education institutions such as universities. JABEE’s main role is to ensure that courses satisfy the standards required by society for engineers’ education. For details of the Department of Mechanical Engineering programs click here.

The distinctive features of the programs in this department are in the “spiral curriculum”, in which the key contents of the core subjects: thermodynamics, strength of materials, engineering dynamics, fluid mechanics, control engineering and measurement science and engineering are repeated in the other specialized classes. Unique classes that integrate lectures, experiments, and seminars in small groups have also been developed, and expert courses are connected to advanced technological areas such as robotics, environmental engineering, and nanotechnology.

From the first year, we offer unique courses in the department that focus on career planning (future life design). We improve the capabilities of practical design and manufacturing by implementing seminars and internships in cooperation with industries. For example, we have a program in which special lectures are given by our graduates who are active in industry in order for our students to learn "viewpoints and ways of thinking" as an engineer with a deep understanding of the environment and safety.

Note that the Bio-Nano Science Fusion Course and the Robotics Course can be chosen as Cross-Departmental Type Education Programs (Minors) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

機械工学科は、大学などの高等教育機関で実施されている技術者育成のための教育プログラムが、技術者教育に適しており、社会が求めている水準を満たしているかを審査し、認定する第三者評価機関であるJABEE(Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education 日本技術者認定機構の略)の認定を受けています。機械工学科技術者教育プログラム詳細はこちらです。
