Summary (Philosophy)

Asian Cultures Research Institute (ACRI),  TOYO University  derives from Asia -Africa Research Institute established in 1959. The aim was to “Primarily and comprehensively conduct research investigations regarding cultural aspects of Asian and African Regions, deliver findings and develop a friendly relationship with the regions and contribute to each other’s prosperity”.
In 1963, the name was changed to Asia-Africa Cultural Research Institute and they built a fundamental system of the Institute. The year of 1999 marked the 40th anniversary since it established.  
In 2002, the name was changed to ‘Asian Cultures Research Institute, TOYO University’ due to the reform of research institutes of Toyo University. The philosophy hasn’t changed since its establishment, and the Institute has been striving for cultural exchange between Asian and African regions. Now our institute holds 56 Regular Researchers and 76 Visiting Researchers (April 2015).
The research targets have been set to East Asia (especially China and South Korea), South East Asia and West Asian countries. The Institute has been taking a core role in Asian studies at TOYO University. Some of the research findings are published in the “Annual Journal of the Asian Cultures Research Institute” issued every year and “Research Series (=Kenkyu Sokan)”, etc.


  • 1959 Asia and Africa Research Institute,TOYO University was established.
  • 1963 The name was changed to Asia-Africa Cultural Research Institute, TOYO University.
  • 1986 The Science Research Promotion Fund supported by Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools of Japan, “Modernization and Traditional Values of South Korea” (until 1989)
  • 1991  The Science Research Promotion Fund supported by Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools of Japan, “Education reform of Asia and related issues of Philosophy and reality” (until 1994)
  • 1997 The Science Research Promotion Fund supported by Promotion and Mutual Aid Corporation for Private Schools of Japan, “Modernization and acculturation-Focused on International companies developing business in Asian countries (until 2000)
  • 1999 40th anniversary of the Institute since establishment. A commemorative lecture presentation was held.
  • 2002 The name was changed to Asian Cultures Research Institute,TOYO University.
  • 2002 The research project entitled  “Cultural and Social Changes in East and Southeast Asian Countries Arising from Their Economic Development and Urbanization”at the Institute was selected as the collaborative research under Academic Frontier’ Project by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). (until 2007)
  • 2007 3-year extension of “Academic Frontier” was approved. (until 2010)
  • 2009 50th Anniversary of the Institute since its foundation

  • 1999年 研究所創立40周年、記念講演会開催
  • 2002年 東洋大学アジア文化研究所に改称
  • 2002年 当研究所を母体とする研究プロジェクト「東アジア・東南アジア諸国にみる経済発展と都市化による伝統文化の変容―大都市・地方都市・農村の比較―」が、文部科学省「私立大学学術研究高度化推進事業」に係わる「学術フロンティア推進拠点」による共同研究に採択(~2007年)
  • 2007年 「学術フロンティア」の3年間の延長が認可(~2010年)
  • 2009年 研究所創立50周年
