Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution Charter of Conduct for SDGs
Toyo University Incorporated Educational Institution and Toyo University (hereinafter collectively referred to as "Toyo University")
hereby formulate the Charter of Conduct in endorsement of the principles and philosophy of the SDGs.
Toyo University originates from "Tetsugakukan (Philosophy Academy)" founded by Enryo Inoue in 1887, where students learned the importance of altruistic struggles by putting their knowledge acquired through deep thinking in search of the nature of things into practice with maximum effort.
His dictum, "The basis of all learning lies in philosophy" is still alive as the founding spirit of Toyo University, along with "Independence and self-initiative" and "Integrating knowledge and virtue". Toyo University has a history of providing educational opportunities for those "with no surplus of money and time" since its foundation, and is running one of the largest evening courses in Japan. Furthermore, the 5,291 lectures delivered by Enryo Inoue have been inherited by the social contribution programs that dispatch lecturers all over Japan.
Toyo University's respect for diversity, including gender equality, can be traced back to 1916, when it became the first private university that opened the door to women. Since then, the promotion of internationalization has boosted admission of international students, and today, its campus is the place where a variety of students and faculty members get together.
Students, faculty members, and all other relevant people of Toyo University will properly inherit the traditions accumulated in its history of over 130 years, steadily contribute to the creation of a brighter future in the global society, and strive to achieve the SDGs in cooperation with a variety of people.
