On Tuesday, September 18th, Toyo University had the privilege of welcoming ambassadors and embassy officials of 11 Latin American nations, as well as the Foreign Minister of Chile, Mr. Robert Ampuero, to a celebration of the publication of Prof. Kenji Matsumoto’s Japanese translation of Pablo Neruda’s “Canto General.”
Following Toyo University Chairman Shinji Fukukawa’s opening address, Prof. Matsumoto (Osaka University) spoke about the experience of translating “Canto General.”
The final speaker, Foreign Minister Ampuero, himself a renowned writer, shared his personal memories of Pablo Neruda and how Neruda influenced his writings.
The gathering was attended not only by the ambassador of Chile, but also by the ambassadors and embassy officials of Argentina, Uruguay, Jamaica, Columbia, Mexico, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, Paraguay and Honduras.
Following the addresses, Chairman Fukukawa, Toyo Vice President Hidetoshi Kitawaki, and Toyo faculty and staff joined Mr. Ampuero and the ambassadors for a lively reception.
