Regarding the status of residence for the alumni and international students who are unable to return to the country of origin

Status of residence and procedure in the case of a leave of absence, withdrawal or dismissal:

If you are enrolled in our University with a status of residence of "Student" and take a leave of absence, withdraw or are dismissed from our University, your status of residence of "Student" will be cancelled. Accordingly, you cannot remain in Japan or work a part-time job. You are required to either change your status of residence to an appropriate one or promptly leave Japan.

(1) Students with a status of residence of “Student” are required to submit a relevant notification to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.

  • Applicable to: Students who have a status of residence of “Student” and have withdrawn or been dismissed from our University. (If you take a leave of absence, no notification is required.)
  • Notifier: International students themselves
  • Required notification: “Notification relating to the Organization of Affiliation (when leaving)”
  • Deadline for submission of notification: Within 14 days after the withdrawal/dismissal
  • Method of notification: Either online, at the office, or by postal mail
  • Destination of notification: The Immigration Service Agency of Japan

(2) Please return your Residence Card during the immigration examination at the airport.

Special measures associated with the effects of COVID-19:

Handling of the status of residence for alumni and international students who have difficulty returning to their home country

As the effects of COVID-19 continue to cause a difficult situation for international students in returning to their home countries, the policy was approved on October 19 that the international students who had graduated and have been dismissed or withdrawn from our University before 2020 were permitted to change their status of residence to that of “Designated Activities (for six months).”

In principle, those who have been dismissed or withdrawn from our University do not carry out the activities permitted under the status of residence of “Student,” and therefore must leave Japan. However, if it is difficult to return home, it is permitted to change their status of residence to that of “Designated Activities.” For details on the procedure, please refer to the following websites and conduct it yourself.

Note: There are no documents to be submitted by our University. Please apply for the change to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau with jurisdiction over your place of residence.
