When you accepted a job offer and work in Japan
Change of your status of residence:
After receiving a job offer from a company, conduct the procedure to change your status of residence from "Student" to a work related status. Even if you have received a job offer from a company, you will not be able to work in Japan unless you can change your status of residence from "Student" to "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services work" or other working status.
The main points considered when granting permission for a change of your status of residence are as follows: When choosing a company (your prospective employer), please keep in mind that:
- The job duties you seek to engage in should relate to what you have studied at a university;
- The remuneration is equal to or greater than the remuneration for a Japanese employee; and
- The company is recognized for its stability and continuity.
If your work starts in April, you can start the procedure in December of the previous year. For the timing of the application, please consult with your prospective employer.
A notice of permission is usually issued within one month after the application, but your status of residence will be renewed at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau only after the graduation ceremony in March (after a Certificate of Graduation is issued).
The documents required for the application vary depending on your current status of residence, so contact both your prospective employer and the Regional Immigration Services Bureau.
As you may be required to submit documents you can only obtain from your prospective employer (e.g., a certificate of registered information, a copy of the latest financial statements), please contact your prospective employer as soon as possible.
If the documents are prepared in a language other than Japanese or English, a translation needs to be attached.

Note: Application for a change of your status of residence to “Designated Activities (Prospective Employee)”
Those who have already received a job offer and fall under any of the followings can change their status of residence to “Designated Activities (Prospective Employee).”
(1) If your period of stay expires before graduation, and you wish to remain in Japan until you are hired; or
(2) If you receive an offer during your continued job search after graduation and wish to continue staying in Japan until you are hired.

If you remain in Japan for the above reason, you can apply for an extension of your period of stay beyond the specified period by submitting a written reason to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau.
Notification to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan
Those who have a status of residence of “Student” are required to submit a notification to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan.
Applicable to: Students with a status of residence of “Student”
Notifier: International students themselves
Required notification: “Notification relating to the Organization of Affiliation (when leaving)”
Deadline for submission of notification: Within 14 days after graduation/completion
Notification method: Either online, at the office, or by postal mail
