What is a Residence Card？
A Residence Card is issued to medium- to long-term residents in connection with a residence permit such as a landing permit, a permit to change their status of residence, or a permit to extend the period of stay. It is issued to new entrants at an airport (Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, etc.)
- Residence Card will be issued when you enter Japan as mid-to long-term resident or when you apply for a permit to change their status of residence, or a permit to extend the period of stay.
- You are required to carry your Residence Card at all times and present it if requested by an immigration inspector, police officer, or other such official. (If you do not carry your Residence Card, you could be detained for up to 1 year or fined up to 200,000 yen.)
- Your Resident Card will expire when you are no longer qualified as mid-to long-term resident or the Resident Card’s validation date has passed. In such case, you must return your Resident Card to the Immigration Agency within 14 days.
