【For Current Students】 Extending or Changing your Visa

Procedure for an extension of the period of stay:

The period of stay with a status of residence of "Student" is four years and three months, four years, three years and three months, three years, two years and three months, two years, one year and three months, one year, six months, or three months. If your period of stay expires during your enrollment period, start preparations three months before the expiration of your period of stay to extend your period of stay at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau.

As you are required to prepare "documents to be applied for and issued by our University" and "documents to be prepared by yourself" before applying to the Regional Immigration Services Bureau, please complete the procedure with adequate time.

The number of days until permission is obtained from the Regional Immigration Services Bureau will vary, depending on the person's situation of residence and the time of application.

Points to note for an extension of the period of stay:

If you do not conduct a procedure for an extension of your period of stay or change of your status of residence and your period of stay expires, it will constitute illegal residency and you will be punished with imprisonment or imprisonment without work for not more than three years or a fine not exceeding three million yen.  Therefore, please be sure to apply for an extension of your period of stay before it expires.

Please note that if you have poor grades, the number of credits earned is very small, or if you have not paid the academic fees, you will not be permitted to extend your period of stay and you will not be able to stay in Japan.

As you may be required to submit a document for the status of expense payment, please prepare the applicable document from 1 to 4 listed below.

If expenses are paid by yourself:
Note: Including cases in which you receive remittances from abroad.

A copy of the page of the bankbook that shows your name, and of the page that shows the latest balance
Note: The amount of deposit balance or remittance is about 120,000 yen or more per month.

If expenses are paid by any person other than you

If you receive a remittance from abroad, a "remittance notice" or a copy of the bankbook that shows proof of the remittance.

If expenses incurring during your stay in Japan are paid by any person other than you who reside in Japan:

Withholding Tax Statement or Resident Tax Certificate of the expense payer

If you receive a scholarship:

A certificate for receipt of scholarship
Note: If the scholarship is less than 120,000 yen per month, please also submit a deposit balance certificate that proves you can pay the shortfall.

 

Once you extend your period of stay, please promptly go to the office in charge at your campus to present your Residence Card.

 

Change of other status of medium- to long-term residence to that of “Student”

If you are a student (or prospective student) who has a status of medium- to long-term residence other than that of “Student” and wish to change your status of residence to “Student,” you are required to file an “Application for Permission to Change of the Status of Residence” at the Regional Immigration Services Bureau with jurisdiction over your place of residence. If the change of your status of residence to that of “Student” is permitted, you will be able to use various support systems such as a partial tuition waiver for international students.
