Bringing Prescribed Medications to Japan

If you want to bring more than one month’s supply of prescription medication into Japan, you need to apply beforehand.

Apply to the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare, and obtain a “Yakkan Shoumei,” a kind of import certificate, to bring the required amount of medication into Japan. If you wish to do so, please follow the procedure.
The required documents are as follows:

  • Application form for import of prescription medication
  • Explanation of pharmaceutical products 
  • A copy of the prescription with the name of the doctor 
  • Documents indicating the expected arrival date and place (including an itinerary)

Prepare the necessary documents, and submit them to yakkan@mhlw.go.jp.
When the documents are properly completed, you can obtain the certificate in about a week.
