Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai)
All undergraduate and graduate students are covered by Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research (Gakkensai). If you suffer accidents that fall under any of the following conditions, apply for insurance benefits to the section in charge of student life within 30 days. If it is difficult for you to apply by yourself within 30 days, you can have someone apply on your behalf. Also, you can apply for Gakkensai benefits even if you are covered by another insurance system that you use personally.

(1) Activities in the regular curriculum Classes and research activities
(2) Activities during school events Entrance ceremony, graduation ceremony, university campus festivals, etc.
(3) Extracurricular activities off campus Sports and cultural activities conducted by in-house organizations approved by the University through the procedure defined by university rules
(4) Activities at university facilities Activities other than (1) and (2) at university facilities excluding training camp accommodations as places for daily life
(5) Commuting Commuting between your home and a university facility along reasonable routes by reasonable means to participate in activities (1) to (3), excluding travelling between your workplace and a university facility unless you are a working student admitted through an entrance exam for working adults
Uncovered cases
Activities prohibited by the University, and activities conducted during periods or in places prohibited by the University; dangerous sports activities (such as mountain climbing); incidents on purpose; diseases; war; earthquakes; radiation accidents; symptoms of chronic disorders that have been latent (such as intervertebral disk herniation); repeated injuries (such as habitual dislocation); whiplash; lower back pain without objective symptoms; accidents suffered during driving without a license or drunk driving, etc.

Hospitalization

(5) Four or more days required for treatment
Death or residual disorder benefits will be paid for death or residual disorders within 180 days after the accident.

If an international student suffers a disease or an accident, this system covers the cost of travel for family members from the student’s homeland to Japan.

Description
Compensation for injured students: Paid to students who need to be hospitalized for one month or more due to injuries
This compensation can be applied for at the same time as a Gakkensai benefit. Applications should be made separately.
Compensation for disaster-affected students: Paid to students whose residences in Japan are affected by storms, floods, earthquakes, fires, etc., according to the level of the disaster
Application for this compensation requires a certificate of disaster impact issued by the municipal mayor.
If the person who has mainly supported the livelihood of your household dies and consequently the livelihood of your household drastically changes, you can apply for a Toyo University Category 3 Scholarship. For details, refer to Scholarships.
