In the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Cross-Departmental Educational Programs (Minors) provide a fusion of learning that transcends departmental boundaries with the objective of sharing and progressively understanding knowledge in other fields, adding to the aptitudes gained as a result of specialized education. Taking minor courses enables students to acquire knowledge in interdisciplinary fields more systematically and meaningfully than in a single department.
Four minor courses are available: the Bio-Nano Science Fusion Course, the Robotics Course, the Regional Studies Course (Global Studies), and the Regional Studies Course (Disaster Prevention).
The Bio-Nano Electronics Research Center, an international base that fuses bioscience and nanotechnology, is located at the Kawagoe Campus. The Bio-Nano Science Fusion Course promotes new manufacturing (such as the creation of bio-nano structures) and was founded on this center’s educational research achievements. The center provides students with precious opportunities to experience an international level of research through cooperative arrangements with first-class researchers and overseas corporations.
Robotics and robot technology are being utilized in various areas ranging from industry to daily life, and those fields are expected to grow significantly in the future. Robotics, the basic foundation, requires mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, and information engineering knowledge, areas which cannot be covered by a single department. In this course, students will take courses in multiple departments and will gain knowledge of robotics.
Active participation in our global society requires the ability to take into account a wide range of matters on a global scale as well as English language skill. This requires individuals to demonstrate a deep understanding of and the capability to explain the culture and regional society of their country, the flexibility to respond to and understand foreign cultures, and the ability to respect and empathize with different societies, cultures, and customs. By studying environmental problems on a global scale, students will acquire the ability to act on and perceive cultures, economies, and architectural history and design from both global and local perspectives. In this course, you will learn expert knowledge from multifaceted perspectives, all of which is necessary to work in corporations that aim to expand their business globally.
It is essential to properly understand possible threats from natural and unnatural means and to know how to deal with such threats. Therefore, this course clarifies the reasons for the occurrence of natural disasters and provides a wide range of expert knowledge and techniques from hard measures (disaster reduction engineering that aims to mitigate damage to structure) to soft measures (such as ideal social systems to improve regional disaster prevention capabilities through self-help, cooperation, and public assistance).
