Since philosophy is the foundation of all studies, people who want to achieve something in particular in society, such as lawyers and industrialists, should be familiar with the various branches of philosophy. And, if educators or scholars of religion study it, it will help them to better understand their specializations. The Philosophy Academy would teach in Japa-nese about the wide range of applications for philosophy and work to expedite learning. What Enryō had in mind was that the Philoso-phy Academy should be an accelerated version of the department of philosophy at the University of Tokyo where he himself had studied. Furthermore, Enryō said that the Philosophy Academy also had an important role to play in academia. First of all, philosophy is use-ful in understanding the relationship between the various fields of Western learning. In addition, the study of philosophy can revitalize and make up for the shortcomings of Eastern learning, especially its philosophy, which is fanciful and speculative. For this purpose it would be necessary to study both Western and Eastern philosophies at the same time, and a school like the Philosophy Academy is needed for this. Enryō concluded his speech by stating that the newly-opened Philosophy Academy was a “temporary schoolhouse” and that he intended to build a new school building in the future and make the Academy independent.
