that time, and the globalization of politics, economics, and culture has continued, bringing the world even closer, developing while go-ing through dramatic ups and downs. How can we best live our lives in the societies of today’s world? The words “carve your own destiny” mean to think for yourself, make decisions for yourself, and challenge yourself to move forward. That is to say, mastership of oneself is what is most important—and, this is Enryō’s philosophy. We live in an age where there are many possibilities for different lifestyles, be it in Japan or other countries around the world, in the city, or in the countryside. Between Enryō’s generation and that of our own, we cannot deny that there are a great many differences, but in Enryō’s ideas and actions there is something that transcends time, something that is still true for all of us. 196
