Are you seriously thinking about “life” again?
An entrance examination for international students will be newly carried out from this academic year as a part of our school-wide internationalization. However, the hope of entering this school is not limited to international students, but is extended to many who are interested in life sciences. Of course, members of society are welcome. The education and research system of this graduate school has a major feature. While there is only one course, the three-field system covers life information science, life functional science and life environmental science, in order to comprehensively explore cutting-edge life science. Although there are many professors on our staff, the school chooses not to open three courses for a good reason. We want to avoid any exclusivity that is commonly observed in many science and technology graduate schools and prefer an instruction system comprised of a wide variety of teachers. For that reason, all graduate students are required to write an interim research report and actively participate in deep discussions beyond the framework of their supervisors. In other words, since all the teachers can actively advise all the graduate students regarding their research, research carried out by the graduate students can be exposed to a wide variety of constructive criticism from all the teachers. As a result, research publications are actively presented not only within Japan, but also at international conferences, at which many students have won prizes, such as prizes from academic societies, etc. Now, “life” is faced with unprecedented crises, such as the recent major earthquake, massive tsunami, and the subsequent atmospheric and marine radioactive pollution caused by the nuclear plant accident. And still other things threaten our “life” including pathogenic E. coli bacteria, new influenza viruses- things too numerous to recount. Furthermore, as has been pointed out for many years, the problem of global warming has become even more serious. Under such circumstances, how about seriously thinking about “life” again? The teaching staff at the Graduate School of Life Sciences is a group of specialists from a wide variety of fields, such as zoology, botany, microbiology and food science, as well as earth science, environmental science, physics and informatics which support these sciences. We cover almost all fields of natural science and extend a special invitation to young people. Please come join us in the pursuit of natural science as an integrated science.
