今野 萌(国際観光学科2年)

I have one main motivation for studying English, namely to use English for studying tourism. By using English, I can see Japan as foreign visitors see it, and I think this can give me a deeper understanding of what Japan needs, I also use different ways to study English. Firstly, I prefer IELTS study over TOEFL. It takes longer through IELTS, but there are some advantages of this exam. One is the speaking and writing test, which I feel helps me know my current level clearly (although the scores on these parts were hard for me to increase). Secondly, I try to talk to people who come from English-speaking countries to improve my speaking skills. Third, I try to concentrate on vocabulary and grammatical structure. It's easy to stop studying, but keeping studying is the only way to improve my skills.  I will not stop studying English.

I have two goals of leaning English at the Toyo University; getting high level of communication skills in English and high score on the TOEIC test. I tried three steps to achieve my goals. For the first step, I took all Toyo’s English programs. I took SCAT, conference writing course and so on. For the second, I challenged to speak actively English. I participated in speech contest when I was a sophomore. Also I communicated with a lot of exchange students and stayed with a local family in UK for three weeks. Finally, I keep getting opportunities to use English. Last summer, I worked at the foreign owned hotel for internship. Thorough working there, I could interact with customers in English many times. These steps make me get more confidence.

I have learned English to communicate local people in other countries. I had an experience that I could not express what I want to say when I went to the Philippines 2 years ago. This experience has made me learn hard. In my opinion, the point to learn English is how much you can use English in a day. Thus I belong to the Crossroad, an English Learning Circle. I also went to the English Community Zone, the ECZ, again and again. As you can understand, I increased opportunities to use English. I am not sure how much it had effects on myself. But at least I feel it has had some effects, more or less, on keeping motivation. I think the most important thing is how you can keep your motivation to learn English.

Through learning English I am now able to communicate with people all over the world. I went to York St John University in the UK, through Toyo University’s language program. I was able to meet many people of different nationalities, some of them were from: the UK, Spain, Afghanistan, Brazil, France, America, China, Germany, Thailand, Jordan, Australia, Italy, Russia and so on. Meeting them I learnt about each of their cultures and how to communicate effectively with each and every one of them. Due to confidentiality reasons, I cannot go into full details, but I am confident that studying English has been very useful for broadening my outlook. Although English is not enough to understand all the cultures of different countries, it is a language worth studying to understand this world more. This is what motivates me to never give up improving my English ability.

I have a mind which tells me I need to speak English both inside and outside of school. Come to think of it, I create opportunities to use English in various places. For instance, I attended a special symposium where I interacted with foreign college students at Toyo University. Then, I presented about rehabilitation programs after the March 11 disasters in Fukushima prefecture. In addition to the above, I have worked in the Embassy of Afghanistan in Tokyo as part of an internship program. Most conversations were held in English with staff members. One of my duties was translation of a newsletter from English to Japanese. These experiences were invaluable and helped me build courage and discipline to speak English in daily life.
