Enhance Communication Skills Effective Around the World

Communication skills are indispensable for mutual understanding and resolving issues around the world. Therefore, foreign language skills, particularly English, are a precondition for conveying your ideas to others.

The Faculty of Regional Development Studies offers various programs designed to develop communication skills in English and other foreign languages.

E-learning prior to commencing studies at the university

Applicants of the Faculty of Regional Development Studies can take advantage of e-learning in English before commencing their studies at Toyo University.

Upon entering the university, all students of the Faculty of Regional Development Studies take TOEIC-IP, which serves as a placement test. By learning English before coming to the university, students prepare for TOEIC and thus get higher scores.

Class placement made according to ability level and placement tests

Soon after they commence their studies at Toyo University, students of the Faculty of Regional Development Studies take a placement test to assess their English language level. Placement for English classes is based on the test results so that students receive English education corresponding to their ability levels.

TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS special courses

TOEFL, TOEIC and IELTS test preparation courses are offered in the spring semester for first-year students. For TOEFL, mastering the test techniques is a short cut to a high score. The opportunity to familiarize themselves with the test techniques as soon as they begin studying at the university helps students earn a TOEFL score of 500 points or more, which is a criteria for eligibility for academic exchanges, early. TOEFL/TOEIC/IELTS special courses are preliminaries for the Learning English for Academic Purposes (LEAP), which starts in the fall semester for first-year students.

Learning English for Academic Purposes (LEAP)

LEAP is a special course for TOEFL preparation open to students from the first-year fall semester to the fourth-year spring semester. To help students raise their TOEFL iBT scores, LEAP provides students with the opportunity to use practical English in an environment emulating that of country where English is the native language.

Long-term academic exchanges

For the long-term academic exchange program offered by the Center for International Programs, Toyo University has academic exchange agreements with 67 universities in 23 countries (as of February 2014), including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, France, South Korean, and China. In addition to these partner universities, Toyo University has sent students to over 140 universities around the world that are members of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a U.S.-based non-profit organization providing affordable access to international education for a diverse student population. As academic exchange students receive a scholarship in the amount equivalent to the tuition of Toyo University, study abroad is very affordable.

Follow-up courses
