Toyo University Holds Its Ay 2016 Peace Studies Program in Cooperation with the University of Tromsø

Eight Faculty of Law students participated in the University’s peace studies program conducted in cooperation with the University of Tromsø, Norway from Feb. 10 (Fri.), 2017 to Mar. 2 (Thu.), 2017.

The students attended a number of intensive courses on various topics related to education, development and peace. The topics dealt with in this year’s program were as follows:

● Country development
● Modernization and the nation
● Relationship between indigenous peoples and the nation
● Lifestyle and everyday life in the Arctic
● Bullying in schools, in other areas of society, and in families
● Stereotypes and prejudices in society

The intensive courses comprised lectures by Ms. Vonheim, a lecturer of the University of Tromsø in the morning and seminars by James Short, an associate professor of the Faculty of Law, Toyo University in the afternoon. Over the days the program was held, our students were able to strengthen their relationships with students at the University of Tromsø and with students who participated in this program from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

One of the features of this program was to learn about the Sami people, an indigenous ethnic group living in the northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. On the last three days of the program, students visited the region of the Arctic where the Sami people live and were given on-site training. The places we visited in the region were as follows.

● The Centre for Northern Peoples
● The Sami people’s television and radio stations
● One of the Sami Parliaments
● A Sami high school
● The Sami University College

All of the students who participated in this program listened intently to the lectures and seminars and proactively engaged in the activities. They all completed the program successfully and received their completion certificates from the University of Tromsø.

<参加学生の感想 / Students' thoughts on the program>

Reona Fukatsu  2nd Grade

One of the most important things I learned was that the Sami people have original culture. But the Sami cooperate with other Norwegian people in various cases. A long time ago there were many problems between Norwegians and the Sami. I thought that we need to understand the differences of culture.

Mizuki Akashi   2nd Grade

I think that the Sami people are closer to modern Norwegians in Tromso than we Japanese and the Ainu. There are more difficult problems between them I thought, but they are always trying to understand each other and share their lives. I could receive a lot of precious experiences from learning about that.

Yoshiki Ishizawa   3rd Grade

Indigenous people have original power to live in more severe environments than people in developed countries. In fact, they stand inferior to us in social position, but they treasure what we are apt to forget: for example, nature and the people around them. Therefore we have to abolish prejudice and misunderstanding towards them, and respect them as the same people as us.
