In the area of public international law, in which students at the Faculty of Law specialize, the Japan National Round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (world competition) (Jessup Cup) and the Japan International Law Students Association Cup (JILSA Cup), which uses the same questions as the Jessup Cup, have been held involving universities throughout Japan since 1985. These Cups are held with the aim of broadening the base of research and education in the area of public international law. In particular, the Jessup Cup is an authoritative and high-level competition because judges at the Championship Rounds have been served by DirectorGeneral of the International Legal Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President of the Japanese Society of International Law, and a member of the United Nations International Law Commission. The JILSA Cup is equivalent to the Jessup Cup. The difference between the Jessup Cup and the JILSA Cup is that English is used for documents to be submitted, discussion, and questions and answers in the former, while Japanese is used in the latter.

The 2017 JILSA Cup was held at Doshisha University (Kyoto) for two days from Saturday, February 18 to Sunday, February 19, 2017, in which students of the International Law Seminar at the Faculty of Law, Toyo University, participated and took second place.
Students of the International Law Seminar entered the 2017 Jessup Japan National Round and the 2017 JILSA Cup, in which English and Japanese are used, respectively. They did not produce the expected results in the Jessup Cup. However, they reached the final in the JILSA Cup, and competed with the team from Kyoto University. Although they were narrowly defeated in the final, they won second place.
When the name of Toyo University was announced at the commendation ceremony, commotion of astonishment and joy was heard among the audience at the venue. They were blessed by many people concerned, including faculty members at Toyo University.
