I learned strong ties with people

ISHII Asami, 22, Higashi Nippon International University
Translated by TANAKA Chihiro

Suddenly my room resounded with Earthquake Early Warning from the cellphone. As I heard the sound for the first time, I was at a loss. After a few seconds, the earthquake occurred. I was afraid of the earthquake. While holding a pillow tight, I waited for the earthquake to end.

When I went out, I met the woman of the next door. “Are you alone? You must be afraid of the earthquake. Come to my house” she told me so. I was with her until my parents came back. I could not believe the scenes on the TV screen. It was just like a movie.

My father came home first. He checked the situation, and found that the tap water had been suspended. We went to Tabito district to get water. Then my mother came home. We wept in each other’s arms. I could make contact with my friends one by one. I felt quite relieved. Yet, Earthquake Early Warning was sounding all the time. As big quakes frightened me so much, I even could not sit down until 5 am.

In the end of March, I got a mail from a university professor. The text says “A volunteer center will be established in Nakoso. Why don’t you make contact with them?” So I contacted with the volunteer center. When I began volunteer activities, I was just following the instructions. I really did not know what to do as my professor advised me, “Don’t try to be perfect from the beginning.”

Gradually I had learnt how to work, and I became a receptionist. I was very happy to meet so many volunteers from other prefectures. As some volunteers had often visited the center, I came to know them by their faces and names. When I said “Nice to meet you again!” they replied “Nice to meet you too!” with a smile. Exchange of greetings was source of my energy. During Golden Week, we had many volunteers from Ube city, Yamaguchi Prefecture. When they left from the center, I could not stop my tears out of gratitude. Even if we are far apart, we are certainly connected. I’m thankful to many people, many wishes, and much warmth. I felt like that for several months.
