Producing Designs for Living Environment, Community Planning and Products with User Centered Design Approach

Message from the Course Chair

Cultivating professionals able to produce designs for living environments, community planning and products with user centered design approach.

The Course of Human Environment Design comprises the following three courses: 1) Architectural & Environmental Design, 2) Tools & Devices Design, and 3) Products & Information Design. The Course aims at cultivating professionals able to identify and comprehensively analyze problems in current designs for living environments, community planning and products to produce better ones with user centered and universal design approach. The Course aims to do this by helping students acquire both an in-depth understanding of each of its specialized areas of study and a multidisciplinary perspective incorporating disciplines of other related academic fields.

Faced with various issues including a super-aging population, a decrease in the number of children, and regional disparities, in order for Japan to sustainably continue to develop, it needs sustainable designs that take both the current and the future states of its living environments and manufacturing into consideration. The Course of Human Environment Design cultivates professionals who can respond to society’s needs for better designs for its living environments, community planning and products. In order for everyone including the elderly, children, and the physically challenged to lead fulfilling everyday lives, all things including living environments, products, and information need to be designed based on a complete understanding of the states of the relevant persons’ minds and bodies and ways of living. In addition, since the existing disparities in living environments, etc., between center cities and local cities continue to increase, design proposals for community planning need to be based on an understanding of the characteristics of each of the nation’s communities. In other words, design proposals for environments and products need to be developed in ways that respond to needs accurately identified from both a bird’s-eye view of society, as well as communities, and from a close-up view of the characteristics of all people. In order to respond to the need for the above types of design proposals to be formulated, the Course therefore offers an interdisciplinary curriculum comprising a variety of academic fields of expertise including architecture, life-supporting engineering, product design, and housing studies.

The Master’s Program assists students in enhancing their specialized knowledge and acquiring comprehensive interdisciplinary perspectives by offering lectures and seminars designed to help them acquire special expertise, skills, and competence for resolving practical issues. It also offers opportunities to engage in educational and research projects coordinated in collaboration with organizations including companies, governments, and citizen activity associations and provides students with assistance in either organizing their findings into a Master’s Degree Thesis or Project, through which students will be able to review the specialized training they receive. Furthermore, in order to respond to the needs of students planning a career in architecture, the Program’s curriculum includes an internship program (Project on International Collaborative Research), periods of participation in which will be counted toward the number of years of practical experience applicants for the 1st class registered architects Kenchikushi (qualified architect and building engineer in Japan) examination are required to have. The Master’s Program aims to cultivate people who, on completing the Program, will be ready with the highly specialized skills needed to perform various works in organizations including the following: 1) design offices in architecture firms, product design companies, and other companies; 2) assistive technology development departments in public research institutes; 3) medical and healthcare facilities; and 4) administrative divisions.

The Doctoral Program’s lecture and seminar programs are designed to support students obtain their doctoral degrees under the guidance of multiple instructors who will assist students in becoming able to conduct research on their own, acquiring the expertise and research skills needed for engaging in highly specialized works, and recognizing and observing professional ethics. The Program aims to cultivate students who, on completing the Program, will be ready to serve in the following roles: 1) researchers at universities or other research institutes; 2) projects consultants; 3) coordinators of collaborative programs between different industries as well as various companies; and 4) professionals who can plan, develop, and lead projects aimed at designing infrastructure needed for a  society with a rapidly declining number of children and a super-aging population. In other words, it aims to cultivate people able to offer various solutions to social issues by proposing and producing designs using highly specialized expertise. We sincerely look forward to welcoming enthusiastic students keenly aware of the social issues underlying contemporary society.

Summary and additional details on the Course

The Course of Human Environment Design offers three courses: 1) Architectural & Environmental Design course, 2) Tools & Devices Design, and 3) Products & Information Design. It promotes the importance of collaboration between diverse specialized fields based on human-centered design and universal design are its fundamental principles. The Course always keeps its eyes open for what is happening outside the academic world and aims at offering graduate education multidimensionally with its curriculum incorporating programs including international projects and industry-academia-government collaborative projects.

専攻長からのメッセージ

利用者中心の視点から、環境やものづくりのデザインを行う専門家の育成

人間環境デザイン専攻は、「建築・環境デザイン」、「道具・機器デザイン」、「製品・情報デザイン」の3コースで構成されています。本専攻は、それぞれの専門領域について深く学ぶとともに、関連する他分野への横断的な視点を持ち、総合的に問題を捉え、利用者中心の環境やものづくりをデザインする専門家の育成を目指しています。

超高齢化、少子化、地域格差など、現在の社会は様々な問題を抱えており、今後も社会が持続的に発展していくためには、現代から未来へと繋がる持続可能なデザインが求められています。本専攻では、社会の要請に応じた環境や、ものづくりにおけるデザインのプロフェッションを育成しています。高齢者や子ども、障害をもつ人など多様な人々が自己実現を達成しながら生活するためには、個人の心身状況や生活特性を把握した上での、環境・製品・情報などのデザインを提案していく必要があります。また,都市部と地方との格差が進行する状況下では、それぞれの地域の特性を把握しながら、まちづくりのデザインを提案していく必要があります。すなわち、社会や地域を鳥瞰的に捉えると同時に、微視的に個人の特性を的確に把握し、そのニーズに応じた、環境づくり・ものづくりが、求められていると言えます。そこで本専攻では、そのようなニーズに応えるべく、建築学、生活支援工学、プロダクトデザイン、住居学など、多様な学問領域の知見を集約した、学際的なカリキュラムを展開しています。

博士前期課程においては、専門性の深化および横断的かつ包括的視点の修得を目指し、高度な知識・技術と実践的課題の解決手法を学ぶ講義、演習科目を配置しています。企業や行政、市民活動団体等との協働教育、共同研究も行っており、最終的な成果は修士学位論文または特定課題研究論文(修士設計・修士制作)にまとめられ、専門的な学びの検証がなされます。さらに、建築の実務家を目指す学生への対応として、一級建築士受験に際して就学年数を実務経験年数に換算するためのインターンシップ科目(国際・産学協同特別実習)も整備されており、キャリアプランに応じたカリキュラムが構成されています。課程修了後は、建築・プロダクトデザイン系のデザイン事務所、企業のデザイン部門、公設研究所内の福祉機器開発部門、医療機関、行政の各機関において高度な専門性を発揮し、多様な業務に従事できる人材の養成を目指しています。

博士後期課程においては、自立して研究活動を行い、高度な専門的業務に従事するために必要な学識・研究活動能力、および研究者として遵守すべき研究倫理を養うため、複数の後期課程教員による研究指導、学位取得支援のための研究指導体制が構築されています。課程修了後は、大学や研究機関の研究者、企業やコンサルタントの指導的立場の人材、異業種や多様な企業間のコラボレーションをコーディネートすることができる人材、超少子高齢社会のインフラストラクチャーを企画・立案し、先導する人材の養成を目指しています。これからの社会的な課題に、デザインを通じて様々な解決策を高い専門性をもって提示できる人材を育成する専攻です。明確な問題意識を持つと同時に、学ぶことに熱意ある学生を歓迎します。

概要

本専攻は「建築・環境デザイン」「道具・機器デザイン」「製品・情報デザイン」の3コースを有し、人間中心のデザイン、ユニバーサルデザインの考え方を基本とし、多様な専門分野のコラボレーションを重視します。常に実社会を意識して、国際的なプロジェクト、産官学の共同プロジェクトなどを進める、立体的な大学院教育を目指しています。
