The purpose of education for developing individuals into global human resources

The Department of International Culture and Communication Studies aims to cultivate individuals who can contribute to the development of a global society by enabling them to express themselves from multiple perspectives as they attempt to facilitate understanding and communication among a variety of cultures. To achieve this purpose while upholding the universal language of English as the foundational means of communication in the globalizing era, students also learn to apply their understanding of languages other than English to their studies. Hence, students are expected to have the ability to promote cross-cultural communication while developing an in-depth understanding of languages and cultures of Japan and other countries.

Program goals regarding skills and abilities that are important for students to acquire

The understanding that English is a common language required in the globalizing era serves as the core departmental education ideology. As such, courses offered by the department aim to equip students with the skills that would allow them to be an active participant in various social scenes using English. These courses involve the acquisition of a high command of English in terms of reading comprehension, listening, written expressions, and oral communications.

  1. By encouraging students to acquire a second foreign language such as German and French in addition to English, the department aims to enable students to acquire the skills necessary for facilitating communication across multiple languages with a central focus on English in our globalizing world.
     
  2. The study of historical cultures and customs in various regions of the world such as in English, German, and French-speaking countries would allow students to acquire in-depth understanding of various cultures around the world and, in turn, enable them to develop the ability to look at our multi-polarizing world with a broadened perceptive. In addition, students are expected to acquire cross-cultural understanding and a spirit to propel coexistence among different cultures through their studies, particularly through the understanding of not only past and present exchanges between cultures but also issues of concern regarding communication between various cultures throughout the world.
     
  3. Students are expected to contribute to the creation of new cultures and international exchange by gaining awareness of the various cultural representations of the Japanese language and Japan from different perspectives as they deepen their understanding of the Japanese culture. In turn, students are expected to share what they have gained from their departmental studies with people in other parts of the world.
     
  4. The department aims to foster students' cooperativeness, critical thinking skills, and their ability of expression in Japanese, as well as developing inquisitive minds. Equipped with these skills and abilities, students are expected to contribute to their society. Also, as students reflect on their linguistic and cultural knowledge gained through the acquisition of the aforementioned skills and abilities, it should help inform their life decisions after graduation.

 As described above, the establishment of the Department of International Culture and Communication Studies aims to develop students into individuals capable of contributing to the development of our global society with their in-depth cultural understanding of various countries and language skills.

Other Program Objectives

The department aims also to enable students to acquire the qualifications for becoming English teachers, general librarians, school librarians, and museum curators, as well as to provide training to students who wish to become teachers of Japanese as a foreign language.

 人材の養成に関する目的

グローバル化時代の世界共通語としての英語を基礎としながら、英語以外の言語についての理解も持ち、日本及び世界の言語・文化に対する深い理解を礎としながら異なる文化間のコミュニケーションを推進し、多文化間の共生を図りながら多角的視野で自らを発信することを通じて国際化社会の発展に貢献できる人材を養成することをめざす。

学生に修得させるべき能力等の教育目標

国際化時代に要請される共通語としての英語を学科教育の基幹として据え、読解、聴解、文章表現、コミュニケーションのすべてにわたって質の高い運用能力を身につけさせ、社会のさまざまな場面で英語を用いて活躍できるスキルを養成する。

  1. 英語に加え、ドイツ語、フランス語など第二の外国語の習得を促し、国際化の進む世界において、英語を中心としながら多言語にわたるコミュニケーションを推進しうる力を育てる。
     
  2. 英語圏、ドイツ語圏、フランス語圏など世界の多様な地域の歴史や風土に根ざした文化の学修を通し、多極化する世界を広い視野で見るための深い教養を身につけさせる。また、世界のさまざまな文化間の交流の歴史・現状・課題を理解させ、異文化理解と共生を推進する精神を涵養する。
     
  3. 日本語及び日本の多様な文化表象についての意識化を図り、日本文化への理解を深めると同時に、それを新たな視点で捉えて世界に向けて発信し、国際交流と新たな文化の創造に貢献できる能力を身につけさせる。
     
  4. 言語と文化に関する教育を通じて、自律的な思考力と確かな日本語表現力、探究心と協調性を涵養し、語学力と文化の素養を以て自らの生き方を確立し、社会に貢献する力を育てる。

以上のごとく、国際文化コミュニケーション学科の設置は、語学力とさまざまな文化に関わる深い教養を活かして国際社会の発展に貢献する人材を育てることをめざすものである。

その他の教育研究上の目的

英語科教員免許状や、図書館司書・学校図書館司書教諭・博物館学芸員の資格を取得させること、また、日本語教員を養成することも教育研究上の目的の一つとする。
