Educational Goals

Our aim is to develop environmental creation specialists who understand that sound urban systems support healthy, comfortable, safe, and secure living environments and who can innovatively but logically design environments that coexist with nature and ensure the sustainable development of cities.

Overview

As the number of environmental problems increases, the construction industry has begun emphasizing science from the perspective of the “origin of things.” Furthermore, as there has also been recent reconstruction pressure because of the maintenance now required on public properties constructed during the intense period of economic growth between the post-war period and the end of the Cold War, defined technological knowledge and skills are necessary for the development of earthquake-proof roads, bridges, water, and sewer services in Japan. However, relaxation and amusement centers are also required for people in cities to live comfortably.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, which began in April 2009, is an extension of the previous Department of Environmental Construction, which was in place until 2008. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is a relatively new department that first builds a foundation of practical skills in construction techniques and technologies and then encourages innovation so that students learn how to design and develop objects and natural spaces to ensure that people live comfortable lives. We develop students’ civil and environmental construction design abilities and encourage creativity and practical planning skills for work on existing structures and new urban developments.

Characteristics

There are three courses students can choose from for their future path: an Urban Environment Course, in which students learn about man-made objects in cities and the environment and focus on the basic elements of cities and environments such as water, earth, and waste; an Urban Design Course, in which students learn about the materials, design, and maintenance of man-made objects in cities; and an Urban Management Course, in which they learn about regional administration, regional culture, and international construction management, all of which are elements of community development. Our aim is to develop students’ ability to think independently and determine a solution and put it into practice. We focus on improving fundamental abilities through enhanced exercises and seminars.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s predecessors, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Environmental Engineering, have over 40 years of history. In cooperation with a strong alumni association, we have established internships at affiliated corporations and actively conduct exchanges with senior classmates, observation sessions, and roundtable discussions. We provide an environment that provides career and employment support for students’ future.

Note that the Regional Studies Course can be chosen as a Cross-Departmental Type Education Program (Minors) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
