Educational internship programme designed for the students from Himeji Senior High School

picThe Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre (BNERC) and the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary New Science (IdNS) have developed various research and educational programmes on advanced nanoscience and nanotechnology for students from partner universities and high schools.

This year, BNERC and IdNS organised an internship programme for the students from Himeji Senior High School. The programme was supported by high-tech companies listed below.

Elionix, Inc.
Japan Electron Optics Laboratory (JEOL), Ltd.
Shimadzu, Co.
Ulvac Phi, Inc.
Hitachi High-Technologies, Co.

Five research projects were specially designed for the students.

Project I: Synthesis and observation of carbon nanostructures
Mentors: Takashi Uchida, Vimal Kumar, Yuri Tanuma, Seiji Hosoda

Project II: Control of patterns formed by magnetic particles
Mentors: Tomofumi Ukai, Asma Ben Salah

Project III: Observation and analysis of bacteria with a transmission electron microscope
Mentors: Toru Mizuki, Hirokazu Shimoshige, Keisuke Hirata

Project IV: Observation and analysis of cancer cells with a confocal laser fluorescence microscope
Mentors: Toru Mizuki, Mohamed Sheikh Mohamed, Keisuke Hirata

Project V: Fabrication of a micro fluidic device for blood tests
Mentors: Yoshikata Nakajama, Ankit Rochani, Junya Kaneko

Four interactive lectures were given to the students via a Skype conference system in advance of the research projects carried out at BNERC.
