Summary

The aim of this research is to understand the dynamics of transformation of border society in South East Asia and East Asia. Focusing on the process of reorganization of ethnic groups to analyse and find out it from the perspective of area comparison. The targets for the comparison are country borders of small islands in Southeast Asia (Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia) and those of maritime area in East Asia (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China). Specifically, the following two topics are the targets for consideration.

1: Changes of systems and practices for immigration controls and border security regarding border administration in these two areas

2: Changes of social space/network of ethnic groups who live in a zone across borders and transformation of their identity related to the ethnicity regarding area ethnic dynamics

The research team strives to clarify the process and pattern of differences, similarities, and regional characteristics of how the people in the two regional communities have reorganized themselves since globalization in the 90’s, while the border administration system has been changing.

Summary

Current laws in East Asia and Southeast Asia are often built on imitating Western modern laws.  However, those areas have many traditional custom laws. Therefore, national established laws that are based on custom laws and Western modern laws are interoperated with laws. The form of inter-operation greatly vary depending on the area. In East Asia, common laws are often integrated with national established laws while in Islamic countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, there is a multi-layered relation among common laws, national established laws, and Islamic laws.
In this research project, the target is the Asian area. It’s divided into 2 large groups; East Asia and Southeast Asia, and the specific development of their common laws, national established laws, and other laws are examined to find out the reality of each area’s common laws. Since it’s not clear for foreign researchers to see, the research team chooses collaborative research with local researchers to clarify this issue.

Summary

The aims of this project are broken down into the following four points.

  1. Since the 90’s, the number of “Trans-national communities (border communities), which are communities across politic borders defined by nations” has been noticeably increasing in Asian countries. Situations are clarified by mainly focusing on examples of family, ethnicity, religious community and their living environments in each border group; East Asian border areas (Japan-South Korea, Japan-Taiwan, China-Taiwan) and Southeast Asian border areas (Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines) by field investigation, searching for information and literature study.
  2. Compare and consider border areas and border groups with the findings acquired in 1.
  3. Attempt comparative considerations with other land border research as the target border areas contain water bodies.
  4. Revise understandings of the following two points
  • Situation where “Border” words and concepts are rapidly getting more prevalent in China, whose economy has been significantly developing
  • “Border life” and “Border people” in Asian countries next to China

In addition, consider Asians who are in a more and more globalizing world including Europe to contribute to reconsideration of modern national state view.

The goals of this research is to discover basic materials necessary for academic research and build databases to find out roles of Asian people who are seldom the target for academic research, based on the gathered information.

Summary

In China and Taiwan, it is characteristic that foreign-affiliated companies and joint-venture companies that dominant economic activities in these areas don’t have many general stockholders unlike Japan. Also, South Korea has chaebol companies. Therefore, a consideration on business combination law and corporate governancefrom the health of administration is required.  This research reviews corporate governance of domestic companies in China, South Korea and Taiwan as well as foreign-affiliated companies and joint-venture companies from both sides of laws and practical operations.

Summary

This research covers policies carried out by the Chinese government, especially the Policy of Constructing a New Socialist Countryside, for the Three Rural Issues (rural areas, agriculture, farmers) which should be urgently resolved in modern Chinese society. The policy content, implementation status and problems are researched through field investigation. The aim of this research is to find out how farmers take the path of getting out of poverty and transition to high income earners under the policies, and how they affect the Three Rural Issues, particularly the structural change of rural areas and agriculture.
