What kind of institution is Toyo University?

Toyo University is a comprehensive university that was established in 1887. Its main campus is located in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward.

Toyo University does not publish a printed pamphlet. You can find information online.
Brochure of the 2023 will be released in early August.

Do many international students attend the university?

1399 international students are enrolled in the undergraduate school (as of May 2021).

Is English required for all entrance exams?

Almost all entrance exams require either an English paper test or an English language certification such as TOEFL.
Please refer to the admissions guideline for details.

I do not have good English skills.

The English exam questions administered at the University's testing site are at the high school level. In addition, all questions are multiple-choice.

I would like to see past exams.

Will I be required to write an essay in the exam?

An essay is part of the EJU-based entrance exam that is offered for the Department of Social Welfare Studies in December.

May I apply to enter more than one faculty?

You may so long as their exam dates are not on the same day.

Are there hennyugaku (transfer as non-first-year student) and tennyugaku (ordinary transfer) exams?

The following faculties conduct those examinations.

  • Faculty of Business Administration
  • Faculty of Global and Regional Studies
  • Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design
  • Faculty of Information Sciences and Arts
Are any interviews conducted in English?

With the exception of the English interview-based entrance examination for the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, almost all faculties and departments conduct interviews in Japanese.

<Online Entrance Examination>
For the Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, the interview will be conducted in English and will include an oral examination.

Are EJU compulsory?

Applicants who use an EJU in the General Entrance held in October, and in October/November must have a score of 300 or above in the Japanese language section (including Writing questions).

<Online Entrance Examination>
For Type B, one of the application qualifications is a score of 300 or above in the Japanese language section (including Writing questions) of EJU or JLPT N2 or above. However, there are special measures for 2023 academic year due to covid-19 pandemic, etc. For details, please check the application guide.

Do I need to submit a certificate of expected graduation (completion) and an academic transcript from the Japanese school that I am now attending?

Submittal of these documents is not required. However, you must submit these documents if, due to the educational circumstances of your country, your school education curriculum extends for fewer than 12 years and you are enrolled in a preparatory education curriculum that was designated by Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

When and how should I pay the entrance exam fee?

You can pay the fee by using one of the following methods

2) Pay-easy (an ATM of a financial institution displaying the “Pay-easy” sign)
3) Internet Banking
4) Credit card

Only payment by credit card is accepted.

Can I pay the entrance exam fee by sending a postal money order or check?

No.

Should I send the certificate of payment that I received when I paid the entrance fee along with my application forms?

There is no need to send a certificate of payment. Please keep it for your records.

I would like to receive an application form.

Due to the fact that our application process is handled online, we do not prepare printed application forms. Application Guide can be accessed via The Entrance Exam information website. Please refer to it for details.

Can I apply from outside of Japan?

Online Entrance Examinations can be applied for and taken from overseas.

Can I have a representative apply for me?

I'm planning to send my application form on the day before the application deadline. Will it arrive in time?

Although the application period is based on Japan time, the postmark of all post offices will be considered valid. For online entrance examinations, documents uploaded after the application period are invalid. Please note that forms that are brought directly to the university will not be accepted.

Is there a time limit on the validity of graduation certificates and academic performance certificates issued by secondary education institutions?

Please submit certificates issued as recently as possible. (The Admissions Office may contact you if submit a certificate that has been issued too long ago.)

Is an attendance rate for Japanese-language school required?

No, unless you are taking a Japanese-language school-designated entrance exam.

What if I can't get all of my application documents prepared by the application deadline?

As a rule, you will not be permitted to take the exam if you do not submit all application documents.

Where should I have my certificates translated?

Ask a public agency or the school from which you graduated.
Note that some organizations may require time to prepare translations, so make your request as soon as possible. (Translations are not required for items issued in English or Chinese.)

When will I receive my exam admission card?

We will not mail the exam admission card. Please print your admission card by yourself via “View Examination Information” section of “My Page” on the scheduled notification day.

<Online Entrance Examination>
The examinee number will be provided only to applicants who are considered to have application eligibility. Applicants are advised to check to see if they received an applicant number via “View Examination Information” section of “My Page” on the scheduled notification day.

How will the results be announced?

Regardless of pass or failure, all examinees will be notified of their result via their “My Page”. Announcement of results is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. (Japan time) of the announcement date.

Can I complete the enrollment procedure after the deadline for admission procedure?

If you pass your exam but fail to complete the specified enrollment procedure or payment procedure before the procedure deadline, you will be considered to have no intention of entering Toyo University. You will not be allowed to proceed with the admission procedure after the deadline. Please refer to Application Guide for International Students for details.

Roughly speaking, how much will academic fees cost?

The amount varies depending on the faculty and department. Please refer to Application Guide for International Students for details.

Do you offer any scholarships?

The university has support schemes to help international students. Please refer to Application Guide for International Students for details.

Can I take the exam even if my visa is not a “Student” visa?

Yes. Your visa type has no relevance on your eligibility to take the exam.

The visa application process concerns me.

In principle, international students who are accepted for admission to Toyo University can receive the residence status “Student.” However, if you have not been granted this status of residence by expected enrollment date, you will not be permitted to enroll.
