What kind of institution is Toyo University?

Toyo University is a comprehensive university that was established in 1887. Its main campus is located in Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward.

Do many international students attend the university?

The total is around 400 (as of May 2016).

I do not have good English skills .

The English used in the exam is at the high school level. Additionally, all English questions are multiple-choice questions.

How difficult is the Japanese exam?

The exam level is between levels N2 and N1 of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. Almost all of the questions are multiple-choice. Please have a look at past exams to get a better idea.

Will I be required to write an essay in the exam?

An essay is part of the EJU-based entrance exam that is offered for the Faculty of Human Life Design's Department of Human Care and Support (Human Care and Support Course) and Department of Health Care and Sports in February.

Is English required for all entrance exams?

Almost all of the exams have English exam. However, the exams differ depending on the faculty and department, for example, 1) No English exam is required in the entrance exams (EJU) for the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, Faculty of International Tourism Management, and Faculty of Human Life Design that are offered in February. 2) While no English exam is required for the entrance exam for the Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design, which is offered in December and February, Applicants are required to submit a TOEIC or TOEFL score instead. 3) No written English exam is required in the entrance exam for Faculty of Global and Regional Studies that is offered in October, December, and February (an English interview exam is conducted for the Department of Global Innovation Studies and a study abroad challenge exam is conducted for the Department of Regional Development Studies); however, an interview in English and submittal of documents pertaining to English ability are required. May I apply to enter more than one faculty?

You may so long as their exam dates are not on the same day.

Are there hennyugaku (transfer as non-first-year student) and tennyugaku (ordinary transfer) exams?

We do conduct hennyugaku (third-year) and tennyugaku (third-year and second-year) exams. However, only the Faculty of Regional Development Studies is accepting applications at the present time.

Are any interviews conducted in English?

Almost all of the faculties and departments conduct interviews in Japanese. Only the English interview-type entrance exam of Department of Global Innovation Studies and the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies study abroad challenge exam of the Department of Regional Development Studies (Regional Development Studies Course), both in the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, involve English interviews.

Are EJU and JPLT compulsory?

You must have an EJU score if you will apply to take an EJU-based entrance exam.
*Eligibility requirements to apply for the Faculty of Human Life Design's Department of Human Care and Support (Human Care and Support Course) include passing level N3 or higher of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test or a score of at least 200 on the EJU.

Do I need to submit a certificate of expected graduation (completion) and an academic transcript from the Japanese school that I am now attending?

Submittal of these documents is not required. However, you must submit these documents if, due to the educational circumstances of your country, your school education curriculum extends for fewer than 12 years and you are enrolled in a preparatory education curriculum that was designated by Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

When and how should I pay the entrance exam fee?

You can pay the fee by using one of the following methods when you make your Internet application. When applying in Japan:
1) Convenience store
2) Pay-easy (an ATM of a financial institution displaying the “Pay-easy” sign)
When applying outside of Japan pre-arrival:
Only payment by credit card is accepted.

Can I pay the entrance exam fee by sending a postal money order or check?

No.

Should I send the certificate of payment that I received when I paid the entrance fee along with my application forms?

There is no need to send a certificate of payment. Please keep it for your records.

I would like to receive an application form.

Due to the fact that our application process is handled online, we do not prepare printed application forms. The Entrance Exam Guide can be accessed via the entrance exam information website. Please refer to it for details.

Can I apply from outside of Japan?

You may apply for the Pre-Arrival Entrance Exam for international applicants from outside of Japan. However, you may not take the exam if you are in Japan at the time of the exam.

I'm planning to send my application form on the day before the application deadline. Will it arrive in time?

Although the application period is based on Japan time, the postmark of all post offices will be considered valid. Please note that forms that are brought directly to the university will not be accepted.

Is there a time limit on the validity of graduation certificates and academic performance certificates issued by secondary education institutions?

No.

Is an attendance rate for Japanese-language school required?

No, unless you are taking a Japanese-language school-designated entrance exam.

What if I can't get all of my application documents prepared by the application deadline?

As a rule, you will not be permitted to take the exam if you do not submit all application documents. If you cannot get your documents in order before the deadline, Please contact the Admissions Office of Toyo University immediately.

Can I submit an alien registration card instead of a “certificate of matters in the alien registration records”?

No. Please have a “certificate of matters in the alien registration records” issued by the municipal office of your city or ward of residence.

Where should I have my certificates translated?

Ask a public agency or the school from which you graduated.
Note that some organizations may require time to prepare translations, so make your request as soon as possible. (Translations are not required for items issued in English or Chinese.)

When will I receive my exam admission card?

After your documents have been screened by the university, you will receive your card from the office below.

  • Undergraduate: Admissions office
  • Postgraduate: Your applied department

The card should arrive around one week prior to the exam date. If it does not arrive three days before the exam, contact the Admissions Office or the course you are applying for.

How will the results be announced?

Regardless of pass or failure, all examinees will be notified of their result via their “My Page”. Announcement of results is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. (Japan time) of the announcement date.

Can I complete the enrollment procedure after the deadline for admission procedure?

If you pass your exam but fail to complete the specified enrollment procedure or payment procedure before the procedure deadline, you will be considered to have no intention of entering Toyo University. You will not be allowed to proceed with the admission procedure after the deadline. Please refer to the Pre-Arrival Entrance Exam Guide for International Students for details.

Yes. Your visa type has no relevance on your eligibility to take the exam.

The visa application process concerns me.

In principle, international students who are accepted for admission to Toyo University can receive the residence status “Student.” However, if you have not been granted this status of residence by April 1, you will not be permitted to enroll.

I would like to ask for individual consultation about admission.

Toyo University will answer your questions if you telephone between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday (excluding national holidays, the summer and winter breaks, and university holidays).

What is Preliminary Screening of Eligibility for Application?

Preliminary Screening of Eligibility for Application may be required if you graduated from your undergraduate program in your home country in three years, have not earned a degree even though you graduated from a four-year university, or did not complete a total of 16 years of education until completion of your university program, even if you have earned a degree following four years of undergraduate study.

Applications for Preliminary Screening of Eligibility for Application must be received by an established deadline prior to the formal application period.
(Please be aware that the screening application deadline will occur prior to the application period.)

Applicants will be notified of the screening's result by post. Those applicants that pass the screening may formally apply to take the entrance examination.

What should I do if the graduation certificate and/or academic transcript that I will submit is not in Japanese or English?
  • If you take the entrance examination in Japan
    Submit originals of certificates that are written in Japanese or English. If a certificate is written in another language, be sure to attach a Japanese or English translation that has been certified by a public agency or Japanese-language school. If you cannot submit the original of your certificates, receive a certification that the copy or translation of the certificate is completely consistent with the original from an institution of the country in which it was issued (in the case of China, a notary public office located within China) and submit it to the university. Alternatively, bring the original and a translation prepared by a public agency, etc., to the Education Affairs Section for Graduate Schools in each campus during the application period, being sure to call the office about this matter in advance. (The original will be returned to you after confirmation.)

Academic Supervisor

Some courses will require you to select an academic supervisor before submitting your application and to provide the academic supervisor's name on your application documents. (Please note, however, that some courses do not require the selection of an academic supervisor in advance.) If this applies to you, be sure to select your academic supervisor beforehand from the faculty members' profiles on the website.

    If you studied Japanese in your home country before coming to Japan and wish to study business administration, for example, you may be required to take a written examination that will necessitate not only a grasp of the Japanese language but also specialized knowledge in the particular field of study. How should I prepare for the interview?

You should be fully prepared to answer questions about your “research plan,” which is one of the documents you will submit, during the interview.

Sometimes applicants forget what they wrote in their application documents. Be sure to make copies of your documents before submitting them, and then reread them before your interview.

Do you hold academic consultation workshops?

Yes, we regularly hold academic consultation workshops in each campus (Workshop details vary from campus to campus.)

Faculty members and current students provide personal consultation and administrative consultation.
You can talk to faculty members if you are undecided about which school you should apply for, Economics or Business Administration, for example.

Particularly in the case of the graduate schools, an extremely large number of people attend the workshops to receive consultation from faculty members and current students.

Please take advantage of these opportunities to talk to faculty members and students.
They will be happy to answer your questions concerning entrance examination procedures and other administrative matters.

Yes, a very large number of international students study at Toyo University's graduate schools. In fact, international students account for between 20 and 30% of all graduate students.
