In 2006, Special Course in Advanced TOEFL (SCAT) was created by Toyo University and its sister school, The University of Montana, as a way to help Toyo University students develop the skills they need to improve their TOEFL iBT scores and study abroad. Since then, more than 600 Toyo students have completed SCAT, and many have gone on to participate in study abroad programs in English speaking countries.

Course Description

SCAT (Special Course in Advanced TOEFL) will help you develop the skills you need to improve your TOEFL iBT score and provide you with opportunities to use English in a realistic setting. Unlike some English courses, SCAT is not a lecture class; rather, it is an interactive language learning environment where each student’s contribution is encouraged and valued.
SCAT meets four times a week over two semesters, giving students extensive contact with highly trained and experienced native-English -speaking instructors who place an emphasis on communicative education. Over the course of the year, SCAT students learn about the TOEFL iBT, improve their basic communication skills, collaborate on group presentations in English, write academic essays, read English novels, and become more familiar with university life overseas. Each year, many students who complete SCAT go on to participate in study abroad programs in English speaking countries. In addition to the academic year program, SCAT also offers a 10-day TOEFL iBT course during spring break, which gives students more focused practice preparing for the TOEFL iBT. Another spring break program is English camp, which gives students a chance to use their English skills in a more fun and relaxing environment.

SCAT （TOEFL特別講座)に履修する学生は、TOEFL iBTの得点を上げるのに必要な能力を身に付けると同時に英語圏の雰囲気で実用英語を使いこなす機会も得られます。SCATは講義式の英語コースとは違い、先生とのやり取りを通して学生が英語を習得するので、各学生の参加が奨励、重視されます。実用英語の充実した専門教育を修了し、経験豊かなネイティブスピーカーであるSCATの講師は、コミュニケーション教育の実践に絶えず努めています。
前期・後期を通して週に４回もクラスがあるので学生と講師との触れ合う機会も多々あります。その一年のコースで学生は、TOEFL iBT対策を習い、英語コミュニケーションの基本能力を向上させ、グループ・プレゼンテーションで他学生と協力し合い、学問的な英作文を作成し、英語で小説を読み、そして留学に親しみを覚えるようになります。毎年SCATを修了した多くの学生が英語圏へ留学しています。この通年のプログラムに加えSCAT は、TOEFL iBT対策の集中的学習ができる10日間TOEFL iBT講座も春休みに行っています。もう一つの春休みプログラムはEnglish Campで、学生にもっと楽しくリラックスした雰囲気で英語を使うチャンスを与えます。
留学に興味がある、就職に役立てるなどの理由で英語を上達させたい、あるいは個人的な理由があってなど、SCATは皆さんがそれぞれの英語学習のゴールに到達できるようお手伝いいたします。
