Language Center

Edward Chmura

Hi, everyone. My name is Edward Chmura, and I would like to welcome all of you to this new semester of the Toyo University Language Center Academic Writing Course.

I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, which is one of the largest cities in the United States. Located near the tip of Lake Michigan in the center of the United States, Chicago is also home of some of the tallest buildings in America.

I have more than 10 years of experience teaching English and even long experience as a Japanese-to-English translator. Because of this, I think I have good insights into why Japanese students make certain mistakes in English and what they need to do mentally in order to stop making mistakes.

My hobbies are running, playing the guitar, podcasting, and YouTubing. I also enjoy talking and with people.

Justin Giles

Hello everyone!  My name is Justin.  Thank you for coming to the Language center at Toyo.  I am looking forward to helping you improve your English writing skills.

I am originally from the United States.  I was born in New Jersey and spent my childhood there.  However, I lived in New York City for 11 years before moving to Japan!  New York is known for its variety of people and great food.  Living in New York allowed me to interact with people of all nationalities and backgrounds. I have been living in Japan for almost 3 years now and love being here.

I enjoy hiking and outdoor activities.  I like traveling to different countries and sightseeing. Listening to music and watching movies are also pastimes of mine.

Nora Alaboosi

Hi everyone and thank you for visiting the Language Centre! My name is Nora and I’m very excited to be your English writing instructor!

I am originally from Toronto but I also lived in Montreal for about 8 years, so I feel like I have two hometowns. Toronto is in the English part of Canada. It is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. I grew up with many different nationalities and I feel like that is why I constantly crave travelling and exploring.

Living in Montreal allowed me to experience francophone culture. Montreal is famous for its many festivals and delicious poutine which consists of French fries, gravy and cheese. Though I wouldn’t recommend it if you are on a diet ^_^

I have been living in Japan for about 3 years. I visited Japan in 2016 and I immediately fell in love with Tokyo. I love its busy areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya but I also love its quiet neighborhoods and abundant nature. I also enjoy Japanese arts like Kabuki and Ikebana. Someday, I would like to attend a Tea Ceremony.

In my free time, I like to read, play piano, learn Japanese, and walk around Tokyo’s neighbourhoods, especially near rivers like Meguro and Shakuji. I also like to go on day trips to surrounding areas such as Hakone and Kamakura.

I love teaching English and watching my students learn and grow. With hard work and a good attitude, language learning can be fun! I look forward to seeing you in the centre!

Kevin Eugene Carlson(Gene)

Hello! My name is Gene Carlson, and I will be working at the writing center for the 2023-2024 academic year.

I grew up in Fairfax, Virginia in the United States.
Fairfax is a fairly quiet "sleeper suburb" near Washington, D.C.
The city of Washington itself is famous for its cherry blossom trees, which were a gift from the Embassy of Japan in the late 19th Century.

My hobbies include cooking and watching sports. I also enjoy reading and working with computers.

After completing undergraduate programs in economics and political science at the University of Pittsburgh, I graduated from the University of Iowa with a master's degree in linguistics in 2016.   My first experience in editing academic writing came during my time at Iowa; this included dissertations and articles for submission to academic journals.

I am excited to take part in your English writing journey over the coming year, and look forward to meeting you soon!

Andrew Derstine

Hello everyone,

My name is Andrew, and I would like to welcome you to this new semester at Toyo University.
I was born in Bogota, Colombia in South America, and I was adopted when I was 2 months old.
I was then raised in the Washington DC area, and lived there the majority of my life.

Colombia is a magnificent country, with a rich and proud culture, beautiful scenery, and interesting people.
Washington DC is the capital of the free world, with abundant opportunities as well as sight-seeing.

I have lived in Japan for 9 months, and I have met many people and had many experiences throughout that time.
I have taught many different students of different backgrounds, from businessmen to university students.
I have even taught 2 year olds!

My hobbies are exercising, cooking, and making music.
I have been lucky enough to work with various music artists from all over the globe, including Japan!

I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your English journey.

Rachel Holton

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel and I’m looking forward to working with you throughout this semester at Toyo University.

I’m originally from Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city and I studied Music and English Literature at the university there.
The University of Glasgow has a beautiful campus which many students say reminds them of Hogwarts castle.
I’ve been living here in Tokyo for just over 3 years, and my goal is to visit all 47 prefectures.
So far I have travelled to 24, so there is so much more I still have to look forward to!
I am also studying Japanese, so I understand well the struggles of communicating effectively in a foreign language.

In my free time, when I’m not travelling or practising Japanese, I love to design and make my own clothes.
I’m here to help support you in your learning goals, so feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

Let’s have a fun and productive semester!

Luke Crouch

Hello everyone. My name is Luke and I would like to give you a warm welcome to this new semester.

My hometown is Sydney, Australia. I also went to university there, where I studied fine arts.
Sydney is a very multicultural city, so it has a wide variety of great food.
The cafes are excellent, and they are very serious about coffee!

I have lived in Japan for eight years and worked at an eikaiwa, an English immersion facility, and as a writing teacher.
I have also lived in Berlin, Germany for six months.
I like to spend time painting, watching Formula One, and gardening.

I’m excited to meet you and help you and help you improve your English skills this year.

Steven John Ross

Hello everyone!

My name is Steven, and I am from Newcastle in the UK.

I’d like to take this chance to welcome you all to the spring 2023 term here at Toyo University!

I’ve been in Japan now for a little over 10 years.

The time flies! I have taught lots of different types of lessons and met lots of fascinating students.

I have definitely leant a lot from them as well!

Newcastle is a beautiful city in the North east of England.

It’s famous for its many bridges that cross the river that goes through the city.

Newcastle is also famous for its football team, Newcastle United.

I am a big fan and often go to watch games in the stadium whenever I go back to visit.

My hobbies are watching professional wrestling, scuba diving and computer programming.

I’m looking forward to meeting you all and having fun this term!
