Center of Excellence (COE) Program
A MEXT program supporting the formation of global research and educational centers and promoting internationally competitive universities by introducing the principle of competition, for the purpose of improving educational and research standards and educating creative young researchers to reach world standards. The program consists of 10 academic fields from humane studies and social sciences to natural sciences.
The "Advanced Combined Studies on Bioscience and Nanotechnology" Project of the Bio-Nano Electronics Research Center has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as 2003 "21st Century's Center of Excellence (COE) Program". An application was made to the "Interdisciplinary, Combined Fields, New Disciplines" category, and was selected from among 176 proposals from national, public and private universities.
Study themes include "nanotechnology", "bioscience", and the most unique "bioscience-nanotechnology fusion". "Bioscience-nanotechnology fusion" is receiving global attention, and we are collaborating with other national institutions as well as with foreign universities. Toyo University researchers are collaborating with many visiting researchers including Professor Sir Harold Kroto and Professor Sir John Walker, both Nobel Prize Laureates for Chemistry. Our "Nano-robot" that can carry molecules on nanoparticles, currently pending on international patent, has high expectations for medical applications. 21st Century COE Program,3rd International Symposium in Miyazaki
