An ageing society requires engineers who can contribute to society by supporting health, research, and the development of medical treatment and health care diagnostic and treatment devices as well as social welfare and nursing robots.

This department develops individuals who have a deep understanding of people and engineering, have wide-ranging insights into the integrated areas of medicine and engineering, can perceive various problems as practical problems, and can apply logic and organizational skills to resolve problems.


The curriculum is based on an experience-based autonomous creative learning program (Problem Based Learning: PBL) that comprehensively develops students’ capabilities through realistic and practical case studies so that they can discover and solve various problems utilizing wide-ranging views. Furthermore, the curriculum is organized in such a way that students obtain balanced knowledge of biology, physics, medicine, and brain science. The innovative PBL harnesses the power of practical case studies, such as researching comfortable bedding by investigating brain waves and blood flow during sleep, and producing robots that fly like a butterfly by studying and observing the flapping of a butterfly’s wings, to encourage critical thinking and innovative solutions.

In the course group for obtaining qualifications, we prepare the basic knowledge groups necessary to successfully pass the Class Two ME Engineering Ability Certification Exam for specialists in medical devices. The examination is attempted in September of the third year, and we aim that all our students who attempt the examination pass it.

Note that the Bio-Nano Science Fusion Course and the Robotics Course can be chosen as Cross-Departmental Education Programs (Minors) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

教育カリキュラムとして、幅広い視野をもって様々な問題の発見、解決ができるように、現実的・実践的なケーススタディを通して総合的な能力を育成する体験型自律創造学習プログラム(Problem based Learning:PBL)を教育の中核に据えています。その上で、生物学、物理学、医学、脳科学、工学のバランスのとれた知識を備えた学生を育成できるようカリキュラムを構成しています。 また、4年間を通じた「体験型自律創造学習プログラム(Problem Based Learning:PBL)」では、「睡眠時の脳波や血流を調べて快適な寝具を研究する」、「蝶のはばたきを調査・観察して、蝶型の飛行ロボットを製作する」など、現実的・実践的なケーススタディを通じて、総合的な能力を育成するのが特徴です。
